Well it happened this morning I lost my 1st fish this morning. The larger of 2 clowns died last nite and I found him this morning. He hasnt been eating for over a week but his mate and everyone else in the tank is just fine. He was older my buddy who I got him (and the whole tank set up) had him for 5 yrs. So we think its just Old age.

My question.....Should I add another clown? Do I have to ? How soon can I?Should it be the same species? Does it have to be? I already know it needs to be smaller

Just a few questions...

They're not the easiest to care for. They're nice fish though. You don't have to find it another friend but that would be the nice thing to do. I would get one of the same species as small as you can find. Your older larger clown was the female. The smaller was the male. If you get another small one the male will become larger and will morph into a female.
I don't think it was old age necessairly. These fish can live as long as 25 years. I personally know someone with a 20 year old fish that just had it's first spawn. The probability is extremely high that these fish were wild caught. So there's no way to tell how old they really are....

I agree it probably wasn't old age but perhaps a natural complication the fish faced as it was aging perhaps?

At my LFS we have a mated pair of maroons that are older than 30 years. Amazing fish. I can only hope mine are with me that long

He had an issue with his fecal matter being white and stringy (the other did as well) the other lasted for 3 days before its symptoms cleared and it was back to normal. This one "caught" it and never bounced back.....Now wifey tells me the survivor is bouncing all over the tank looking for "fatty". Think I may have to start lookin for another one sooner than later
