Clown Fish Breeding Tank Sizes

Hello everyone :)

I am thinking of breeding a pair of Black Ocellaris Clownfish. I have found a ton o f information on the web except for tank sizes. My question is What size tank do I need for the pair to live in (they'd be the only inhabitants besides a CUC)? and What size do I need for the fry tank?

Thanks!

10-15, once they find there spot they don't stray to far away. if it were larger clowns like maroons etc i would say a 20l.

I got eight 20H tanks during the Petco sale to setup my brood tanks. The glass is a little thicker than the 10 gal tanks for drilling bulkheads. If you set them where the narrow end faces forward in a rack, not a lot of difference in space. I am putting 4 tanks on two rows, with the sump underneath, in a 50" wide rack.

Sounds like your going in the right direction. All my adult breeders are in 10 gal glass tanks. I use 5.5 gal tanks when I transfer the flower pot with eggs on it. After 1 month I move them to my grow out system which has 10 gal. tanks showing the small side of the aq. I plan on replacing the 10 gal tanks for 20's.

How many Growout tanks do you use for one spawn?

1 tank. A good batch is in the 200+ count after metamorphis. I am stocking 10 gal. tanks with as few as 70 fish up to 331 which is the most ever stocked in a 10 gal. tank. I am a breeder in Phoenix, Az. selling to most of the fish stores. Currently with 3000 + fish so that's why I stock the tanks with a lot of fish.

Thanks for the info! I'm actually in Tucson. What kinds of clowns do you raise?

Now I have Ocellaris & Black & White. I sold my breeding pairs of Gold Stripe Maroons & Tomato since their is little demand for them. I am also breeding Orchid Dottybacks & Erectus Seahorses.

Are your breeding pairs that are in the 10gallon filtered individually or are they all plumbed together?

They are all plumbed together. If you would like yo see a picture of the fish room with all the grow out tanks then go to www.saltcorner.com. This is Bob Goemans web site. Click on articles & go to anemone fish. The pictures were taken about 3 years ago.

That is quite a set-up! Are you using just ordinary fluorescent lights?

I'm using mostly T-12 shop lights some with cool white & some with 10k. Now I have a few T-5 home depot fixtures. You really don't need reef lights, only enough light to see the fish & clean the tanks.

Sorry to keep bombarding you with questions, but I have another. :)

What size flower pots do you use? I was at Home Depot today and they had one that was about 6.5" at the mouth and one a bit smaller than that.

Thanks!

Some are 4", 6", & 6 1/2.

from what i read, most people use a bunch of 10 gallons linked to a central sump to help with nutrients. seems to work well, but have to find a way to cover the bulkhead.

They sell bulk head screens but the holes in it will let most 2 month old or less go through it. Put a sponge over it or use an evap cooler pump screen around it. Or just make one out of fiberglass window screen. Keep it clean so your tank doesn't overflow.
