clown fish question

I have a percula clown (tank raised) in my 12g aquapod. Its the only fish in the tank and its doing great. The only problem is that he does not seem to be pairing very well with the anenome (sebae) and instead he is bothering my coral, the guy at the lfs called it a sunburst/sunflower--something "sun". Anyway, it is an LPS coral and it has not come out in a couple days becasue everytime the polyps come out, the clown swims through them and tries to settle in it until the polyps retreat back in. What can i do about this? Is it going to kill my coral?
 
No i don't think it is going to kill your coral. he is just trying to host in it. sometimes clowns can be picky hosters so don't give up!
P.S. i have also seen a clown host in a open brain lol. :smokin:
 
scoobasteve, if you are having problems making him host in the anemone, ive seen some threads where people place the anemone inside a fish net, and then toss the clown into the same net, so it has no choice but to touch the anemone (submerged underwater of course). I think they said to leave them for several minutes. The guy reported that they hosted the very next day, even though the anemone had been in the tank for a month. I dunno, its worth a shot. Let me know if you try it, how it goes because i want to get a RBTA for my new true perc. :D
 
i have also read where people tape a picture of a clown in an anemone onto their aquarium...i know it seems crazy..but i have read on here of people who have done it and after like a week the clown hosts the anemone...maybe just coincidence i dont know

Whaaaaa? Just get an anemone that is right for your clown ... In nature not many percs host in seabae's, mostly just seabae clowns. There is a clown/anemone host list on the clownfish & anemone forum. I waited 6 months to find the perfect anemone for my percula and oscellaris. Ritteri a.k.a. Purple Foot Anemone's work 90% of the time, my clowns started hosting 20 minutes after it was in my tank. Only problem is it's hard to find a small ritteri ... look at this 7-8" one take up space in a 29.

Just so this helps you probably have whats commonly known as just "sun coral " .. or sun polyps.. They aren't photosynthetic and need to be fed. When they come out they are probably hungry - and you may notice them coming out at night which I think they do naturally in the wild..

However they can be trained to come out in the day with a spot-on feeding schedule.

Try offering spot feeding to it and the clown at the same time and maybe it'll stay out and hopefully the other tricks here will herd the clown toward the anemone :)
 
Sometimes in the absence of an anemone clowns take refuge in corals when they aren't feeling well too... here is my clown when she was bloated or had some sort of upset stomach and her balance/bouyancy was off ... she began taking refuge near the mushroom day and night until she got better.

Hahhahha yes I can relate Rob ... My clowns pick at me when I'm algae scraping near the anemone, my 6 Line wrasse nips me and swims through my fingers and tickles me, and my cleaner shrimp gives me a manicure! HOW the heck am I supposed to get any tank work done with all these distractions! :lol2:

Ritteri ... WoW I have never seen one so small! Great FIND! Those suckers either come in Large or XL around here!
 
LOL i still jump win she nips, she is almost 3 years old. kinda grumpy! i had to buy a 5 lb rock just to get the nem, but would do it all over in a sec.
 
Hahhahah you still jump :lol: it's surprising ... I know! ... I only move when the 6 Line nips cuz she does it at high speed, almost like a miniature pinch. Oh I've noticed the grumpiness from the female as well, I think it's all females in general :lol2: ... the male doesn't pay as much attention because he's chasing her tail.
 
haha thats the concensus then. My clown (Nemus Fishius as my gf calls it) HATES the magfloat, and flicks it incessantly... i always have to remove it.
 
Yeh, my problem wasn't really that i wanted a good anenome for the clown to host, its just that everytime the polyps on my sun coral come out to feed, the damn clown swims over and stresses the coral out and it retracts its polyps. I have been feeding the coral--come kind of phytoplankton stuff in a bottle the lfs sold me--it has to be refridgerated and it smells to high heaven-thats all i know about it. I have been just emptying a capful in the tank every ther day. Should i start spotfeeding the coral? It would always come out fully during the day but ever since the clown started trying to settle in the polyps it has not come out, if the coral is still alive tomorrow afternoon i am just going to take the clown back to the lfs, if i don't it looks like he is going to kill my coral.
