Clown Goby in SPS tank

Are you familiar with the little clown gobies. I like the green one and the yellow one. I was interested in putting ONE of the two in my tank. Do you have any knowledge/recommendation with keeping this fish in an sps tank? I have heard that they will hang out in the acro colonies like the commensal crabs do which is kind of cool but I have also heard that they can damage the colony when breeding. If I only by one there will be no breeding going on. Should I be concerned with adding this fish?

Ok so here's my experience, just keep in mind that some people will jump up and down and tell you that ANY clown gobies are not sps safe.

I have three, two greens and one yellow. The greens are no problem at all. They sorta bop around between different corals (sps and softies) and basically never really hang out in just one. They both do this.

Now the yellow one basically just sticks to this one yellow and green mille that I have. The mille was extremely healthy (growing about a 8" across in about 2-3 years, which is pretty good growth considering that I had knocked off about a third of it like three times). I mean it was seriously healthy. As soon as that goby went into the tank it began to monopolize that coral. It would chase the other clown gobies out of it and it would never venture very far from it.

At the moment that coral is almost completely dead. I really don't think it was from the slime on the gobies skin being toxic or anything like that. I just think that it was from having no polyp extension for a long time. I'm not super bent out of shape about it though because I fragged that coral for like literally 30 people, so I already have a friend who is offering to give me a frag back.

Anyways...I am not trying to persuade you to get green clown gobies or not to get yellow clown gobies, but I do think that you need to be very cautious when you add any of the clown gobies to your tank.

Btw I love the buggers anyways. I said this in another thread earlier, but I wanted to also say that I consciously moved all three into my 240g tank (that is about half or more sps) because they are so neat.

I appreciate your analysis of the differences. I have pretty much decided that if I get one it will be the green one but I don't know if I will get or not. My SPS reef is only 29 gallons. I may wait until I get my 120 gallon to add the green goby. Haven't decided yet.

I have a pair of yellow clown gobies in my mixed reef, 120. They hang out in the sps and I've never had any trouble with them destroying any corals. They have one sps they like the best, but will perch on all of them. I will say, though, that they are mean to each other. I had a third one get bullied and die because the biggest one wouldn't accept him. He did accept another one though, and they paired up. I don't know if they lay eggs, but like the last poster said (I forgot your name) I like the little boogers too and they're fun to watch. I like the yellow ones because I wanted something yellow. I've never tried a green one. Another consideration is they will go down your overflow through the teeth if you have that setup. I lost several that way, rescued a few in the sump, had a few die on the way down. I finally put a screen on the overflow to end that problem. I now have this pair and they've been with me about a year now.
