Clown Id

The link isn't working -- says that I have to sign into AOL. Any way you can upload the picture as an attachment, or to something like photobucket?

You know, I am not sure. But, if you would like to try it, I would get them both right now -- since they seem to be tolerating each other -- just going by the fact that I can't see any torn fins.

But, what size are they? Both the same, or one larger then the other. Also, how long have they been together?

The orange skunk is about 3 inches and the pink about 1.5-2 inches. I dont know how long they have been together they are at a fish store and they said they came in today already "paired".

Not sure I would trust that they came in "paired", but the sizes seem pretty good. Would be hard pressed not to go for it if it was me.

Yea I hear you about getting them. Once I saw it i liked how it looked different from the more common clowns I see. I would have to set up one of my tanks that are just lying around with some established rock and water. Im just not sure if I want to pink skunk that the store is trying to sell with it.

This is just my opinion -- if you think you can find another orange skunk, then I would just buy the one, and pair it later. But, if you like having 2 different clowns, then go for it.

Its the first one I have seen at the fish stores around here so I dont know how common they are or not. I would prefer having two of the same species.

That is a good point -- I can't recall the last time I saw any in an LFS around here (( Chicagoland )) -- But, I have always liked pairs (( even mis-match )) over a single, but having a pair of oranges would be great.

In the end, I don't think I am helping much.

You are helping you where the only one who responded to my thread and you gave me my answer that I had asked. Im just indecisive if i want to set up another tank I have 3 with 3 different types of clownfish in them thats all.

Cool.

I understand about the tank. I have an empty 40 breeder sitting around. Deciding if I should transfer my cube into the 40, or have both (( which would mean 4 )) going.

I would probably get them both. If the orange is the bigger one, then it is the female so it makes no difference if you get it single or paired. You can trade in the pink one later if you ever see another small orange.

I know I just said I would get both, but if you don't like the pink one then forget it. You could always try to wait for a non-female orange and if it takes too long, then you could try a pink yourself.

On the other hand the pink might look better in your care than it does now. I would probably let the wallet decide haha. If it was not expensive, then trading it in if you don't like it or find another you like more is an option.

Edit: I guess I am not that helpful either :D

I have one orange skunk and am patiently waiting to find a second. I've called many LFS's in my area and quite a few told me that had orange skunks but in fact they were pinks. I prefer the bold stripe of the orange's and that it comes all the way down to their lip. The LFS's said that they're available seasonally and now is not the right time.

They're not expensive (~$20), and they're a great fish IMHO. I'd pull the trigger if I were you.

I am not a fan of mixed pairs. For two reasons, they don't look natural to me and as they get older and start thinking about breeding, they tend not to give each other the correct "clues" and fighting/killing breaks out.

Don't let the LFS try to say you have to buy the pair. Inter-species pairs are very rare in the wild. The orange skunk is not big enough to be a breeding female, so they weren't captured as a breeding pair in the wild, so therefore they are not a pair even if they were captured in the same anemone, which is also unlikely since they prefer different types of anemones. I have had two breeding pairs of orange skunks. One of which went from a breeding male to a breeding female in my care. Orange skunks need to get bigger than 3" before they lay eggs.

Orange skunks are not very rare, they just aren't very popular. I don't know why, I love them, but one clutch of babies would pretty much flood the market around here (which is why I don't raise them anymore). If you ask around you can probably get someone to pick up a little one to go with the larger one if you are patient.

Just out of curiousity how big did your orange skunks get Phender? They didn't look that big in your merten's but then again I don't think any clown would. I've always thought of them as a diminuitive species but now you've got me rethinking that notion. The thought of a 4 or 5 inch sandaracinos sounds pretty awesome!
