Clown Injury

Hello All,

First, I am posting this in the Anemone and Clown forum as well to get the most possible opinions.
I received this maroon clown yesterday. She is exquisite (and BIG 4 inches) except for what look to be a couple of scars/wounds.

You can see the damage above the left eye (as you are looking at the pic). There is a slight swollen area that extends from the scar/injury, over the top of her head, to the approximate place behind the right eye. She has the same kind of injury (except not as bad) on the last gold stripe by her tail.

I am thinking maybe bacterial, since the USPS screwed up the delivery by a day, so instead of getting her the next day, it turned out to be 48hrs. Fortunately, the seller packed her in two gallons of water, or she would have never made it. Opinions please on treatment (if any) and prognosis. TIA

Just observe and feed well. I've gotten plenty of damaged fish in the mail and they heal up in a week or two. Of course if it turns red or gets worse, start treating with a broad spectrum antibiotic (Maracyn plus, kanaplex, etc) in a QT tank.

+1 to the comments by h2so4hurts above.

These fish are very hardy and usually little things like she has heal well. I'm always extra careful with new clowns, especially wild-caught fish. They are very susceptible to brooklynella. It doesn't look like a problem in the pic; but brook can often start as just something that looks like a wound. Watch closely and be sure this doesn't spread or start to look like sloughing or peeling skin. Not trying to sound any alarm; but brook is VERY common with wild-caught clowns.

These big female Maroons are beautiful fish, also one of the most territorial fish I know of. I have one in a 240 and whenever I add a new fish to her tank, she has to go into the QT for a week or so; when she comes back, she will re-claim what territory. She will even chase my Sohal Tang if it gets to close to "her spot".

Turk,

Thank for the comments. I can attest already to her being territorial. Even though she has accepted my male maroon, sometimes she "puts him in his place". Kinda like being married!

I check her everyday. The injury did look a little better yesterday. We'll see what happens. The dealer I purchased her from says he quarantines everything a minimum of eight weeks. I am thinking if this is the case, maybe she was just injured either being packed for shipping, or the long time it took to ship. BTW, if Brook does appear, what is the medication of choice? TIA

I have never heard of a dealer who does a full quarantine job. A full 8 weeks of QT would probably double the price. Even Diver's Den, maybe the best source of fish on the planet, strongly suggests you use a QT regimen with their fish. Not using a QT, regardless of the source, is really playing with fire.

Hi Turk,

Couldn't agree more about quarantining.

She was double the price (over $100)! I normally do tank transfer for quarantine, but I was under the gun with this one. I had orignally purchased a mated pair, but the female died during quarantine. I finished my quarantine time table and put the male into the DT. We (the dealer and myself) were concerned that the male would turn female soon, so we took the risk and put her into the DT after acclimation.

I hope the fire is out. ;o)

Formalin, or a med that contains formalin.
BTW, Reno sure has grown; I spent my undergrad years there, long ago.

Thank you for the formalin tip. As far as Reno, I don't know when your undergrad years where, but we moved to Tahoe in '93, and to Reno in 2007. It grew alot until the economy bust in 2008-09. Still, if you haven't been here in 25 or 30 years, yes, it has grown. I would guess that when the economy picks up again, it will resume expansion.

I've gotten at least 5 fish from the DD that were completely infested with crypto. Their facility is contaminated and cannot be trusted.

You sure don't hear that often. I've seen crypt on only one of the fish I've gotten from since moving. But, I don't know of any facility that should be considered crypt-free.

Too late to edit. I just can't remember any other peers on RC having bad experience with DD. I've seen countless posts regarding DD and never a problem. LA always gets rave reviews from my peers too. Anecdotal, of course.
