Clown laying on bottom

I was away for the weekend and got home a bit ago. I usually take inventory of live stock when I get home, and everything was looking good. Now one of my clowns is laying on the bottom breathing hard. Looked like he just tried swimming up and wasn't successful.

Any ideas??

What size tank? Tank mates? How long were you away (weekend only=2 days?)? Not a long time to be gone. Any chance there were parameter swings? Corals look OK?

40 breeder 8 months old. Two clowns, goby, fire fish , shrimp and small clean up crew. I was only gone two days. Corals look good. I'll check some parameters but they should be stable.

Both of my clowns will lay on the bottom. Sometimes they are on there bellys, other times on there side. They do this in lower flow areas, and are happy and healthy, I believe they are just resting/sleeping. Just thought I would throw this out there. I hope yours is ok.

My two sleep on their sides. Clowns act weird sometimes, I've seen the lethargic swimming up out of mine as well. Just wait Until they start spinning on their noses.

ha ha ha, I haven't seen that yet. My two clowns actually lay on their sides at the surface of the water when sleeping. Fluctuating between that and wedging themselves in between the overflow and powerhead. but more times than not, on their sides.

How is the clown doing? Is he still on his side?

Unfortunately he didn't make it through the night. Still is baffling what happened, and so quickly. I'll keep an eye on everything else to make sure things are going good.

You never know what ailments he may have had. Like a person, there may be unknown causes for death that you had no control over. Just a thought.

Do they appear unhealthy? If they seem to have an illness, it is usually pretty obvious. Otherwise, it is likely healthy and simply resting.

too bad.
what did those parameters show up as? those along with temp and salinity are about the only clues you might get before more fish start becoming stressed.

Salinity 1.025
Ammonia 0ppm
Nitrite 0ppm
Nitrate 1ppm
Temperature stays 78+/-0.5

Jwheld. How old is your tank? Don't wanna speak for others but the parameters I think they are referring to are the other big three. Historically when someone lists Ammonia nitrates and salinity only they are newer to the hobby and a good bet it's either a FO system or a fairly new setup that is not stable enough to support life. Just thinking out loud so you don't have to go through this again

Not trying to be harsh.

Not being harsh at all! I'm still relatively new, and the tank is 8 months old. The reason I listed the above was that I wasn't sure the mag, all, cal influenced the fish. Let me know if I'm wrong!

I do have LPS so I keep things stable.

Alk 9.8
Cal 420
Mag 1240
Phosphate 0.01
pH 8.3
