Clown or Tang?

Clown or Tang to add to the tank first? New tank and is it better to add a pair of 2 clowns or the small tang first? If the clowns, can you put an anemone in with them right away? Do you need 2 anemones for 2 clowns? (perculla clown) (purple or blue tang)
Thanks for any advice!

first how big is the tank? if its the 46 i'd say no tang, but you would add the clowns first anyways. And for anemones its recomended to not get one right away in new tanks. They need well established tanks which a new tank usually isnt.

wait at least 6 months for a anemone.
You only need 1 anemone for 2 clowns.. but you really never need to get a nem.
Tangs are def to big for a 45 gal tank.

Research your clowns! Certain clowns host different anemones. And some anemones are MUCH harder to take care of than others.

A bubble tip is the most forgiving nem.. but the clowns that host it in the wild are maroon clowns whitch happen to be one of the 'meanest' variety of clowns. (although I LOVE mine) ;)

t5...if you are determined to add then....add the Tang 1st.
IMO....Tangs tend to favor ICH....so get this guy in first and wait 1~2 months to see about any infection.
Then add you clowns............
and yes...I know that tank is a little small for a tang.....

Yes the tank is small but I am getting a small tang and upgrading to a bigger tank when needed, manager of the store told me I could do this and she sets up tanks on the side.

Which kind of tang? It makes a big difference.

I don't know why maroon clowns get such a bad rap regarding their alleged "meanness." I have a pair and they never bother anyone. They protect their territory (around the BTA) and they stir up the sand sometimes just to annoy me, but they have a lot of personality and seem to be extremely hardy. If you definitely want an anemone, and you definitely want clowns hosting in it...then your best bet is a pair of maroons and a BTA, IMO.

also...managers at the lfs will sell you any story just to sell you...stuff lol. I personally dont go by what the lfs's say because they've got me a fair amount of times.

Yeah i would skip on a tang for a 46 even a small one.. I would add your clown pair of choice and see how they do then decide on your next fish.

Just out of curiosity while on the topic would a 55 be suitable for a tang? and if so what species (just for future reference along for the ride here )

some are going to say yes...i say no tang should be kept in less than like 65 preferably 70. But again, thats just my opinion, because they need lots of swimming space.

I would not suggest a maroon clown to someone is just starting the hobby. Yes they are the prettiest but they are the meanest and yes there are some cases in which they work out but its not very common. You could maybe get away with just one but putting two in a tank takes more than a beginner. Another thing is trying to pair them and this is the most difficult part about them. I would suggest a Tomato or ocellaris clown for a first clown.

I guess you could get an established pair so there would be no worries about them fighting. If you have to have a maroon, then do it this way. Be prepared to pay 60-100 bucks on an established pair though.

Im still debating what i'd like to ideally keep in my future 55.. we'd probably be getting TBS rock and I'd aquascape and see if there was room. If no tang i'd love to keep an angel but i want to keep corals and don't want something nipping at them! silly fish.

My other option which i still need to study about to see if its possible would be a rabbitfish. i think they're pretty neat looking too. just gotta find things suitable for 55- or in this threads case a 46

i agree with chunks..however if they're by themselves they're fine for a beginner imo. I personally would be pretty warry about putting them with other stuff, because they're one of the largest (if not THE largest) clownfish and they are pretty dang mean.

I also asked about a rabitt fish for my 55 a while back and the general answer was "no"...too big.

smaller then 100 gallons.. no tang at all..

if you do it i would also recomend raising children in a cage

learn that your tank has limits. accept them. and gat a bigger tank. dont get a tang and say " ill upgrade when needed" because that may never happen

plus even the tiny ( 1 inch) need more room then your tank in a matter of months

I must have the most mild-mannered maroons on the planet then. The female used to spit sand at a lunare wrasse that would come by and annoy her, that's it as far as outright aggression. Now, I did get them as an established pair, and for what its worth they are the gold-striped variety.

My thoughts on the recommendation had more to do with the anemone however. Anemones of any sort can be challenging, and are not for beginners. However, if you HAVE to get one, the easiest host anemone is the BTA, and the only sure bet as far as hosting is concerned are maroons.
