Clown questions

I been looking into Picasso Clowns and Snowcasso Clowns. Does anyone local own these fish? Are there any local breeders? I saw one in NC, but was hoping for someone closer. Also, if I add two of these clowns when they are young will they both take to one Anenome or would they perfer their own?

I don't know of a local source for Picasso or Snowflake clowns, but you might ask John at Coral Reef Aquatics in Athens to see if he could get a couple, or talk to an LFS closer to you in B'ham.
Paired clowns will share a single anemone (assuming that they are willing to host in an anemone at all)

Isn't Picasso ORA's exclusive? I know John is not fond of ORA's clownfish and buys clowns from Sustainable Aquatics almost exclusively. Sustainable Aquatics do not breed Picasso. You might have a better luck with an LFS in Birmingham who buys ORA's fish.

Picasso is a type of percula. Percula crownfish hosts certain kinds of anemones in the wild such as Heteractis magnifica and Stichodactyla mertensii. However, captive bred ones like Picasso may or may not host an anemone. A lot of clownfish are just as happy with softies. My clownfish pair (Ocellaris) hosts a large frogspawn in my 120. Another single one in my 15 hosts a Toadstool leather now, but it used to host pompom xenia.

Tomoko: with the anemones you mentioned above are they safe for my other fish? I hear there are certian varities that will not sting. I believe you are right about the Picasso being ORA exclusive. What happens if they have babies? Is it like a patent thing? I read your thread on the eggs and really enjoyed it.

Omega981: I'm hesitant about ordering them because I've seen some beautiful patterns and some that are not so pretty. I wish I could visit someone who has several. I would hate for you to order them and then I end up not liking them, but it looks like that may be the only way. Where is your store?

Most fish will stay clear of most anemones, unless you are talking about a carpet. I used to have 10 or so BTA's running around an SPS tank and never lost a thing (fish or coral).

Anemones do go for walks and can sting and kill corals. But as said above, your fish are generally safe as long as they are healthy -- with the exception of carpet anemones.

These anemone that I mentioned are notoriously difficult to keep. I am afraid that they are one of those that should be left in the ocean. They are hard to come by anyways.

A tube anemone is another one that eats fish, but no clownfish host them.

As for their offspring, I suppose you can sell them, but you won't be able to use the name "Picasso" to market them.

I have a pair of false perculas in a lta, and have been hosting it for over a year, and it has never moved, or have I lost a fish or coral to it, but that is just my own experiance, I have heard of them being distructive, and clowns not hosting, but it only took mine a couple of days.
