Clown submissive to... Magfloat?

So I think it's safe to say that my male clown has hosted my Magfloat. He always slept by it and swam close to it during the day, and even after I rearranged the rock work during a move and switched what side the Magfloat was on, he changed sides with it and found a cave about 5 inches from it that he sleeps in at night. His partner passed away about two months ago and has been single ever since. What I'm confused about is I was laying in bed watching from a distance, and I'm fairly confident I saw him get the submissive shakes three times (twice within 10 seconds, once about 10 minutes after that) next to the Magfloat. I thought it was crazy so I considered the possibility of him coming down with ich, but I have never seen him strike on anything, and he eats vigorously and is very active with me when I'm close to the tank. It really didn't resemble striking as much as it did the shakes. Is this something that any other clown owners have noticed? Is it possible for a clown to become submissive to an inanimate object?
