clown too ruff on the bubble tip ?

I picked up a bubble tip and a clarkii from a friend. The Clarkii took to the nem right away but is constantly diving and tail slapping etc. The bubble tip tentacles have shrunken down to thin threads. It's looking kind of tattered.

I'm wondering if a clown can pummel an anemone ...to death ?

It sure can, you typically want t let the nem be adjusted and have it be about three times the size of the clown to help the nem out some...

Thanks for that reply. I had a condi which was much larger but it's tentacles reached into other corals and they were getting stung. So I switched them out.

This nem is maybe double but not triple size.

I think I'll have to get a larger nem but it may be better to get someone to hold the clarkii for a little while. Just to let the current bubble tip relax.

Ya know, if I had a girlfriend that acted that way it might be fun for a little while but gimme a break !

I have the same issue. I had a decent sized rbta and it split into two smaller ones and the clown is far too big and rough for either of them and they began to perish. A good remedy for me was i bought a pretty large gbta and the clown immediately took to the larger one leaving the smaller ones to regain life and size. The only prob is the gbta secided to take a walk after a week and ended up in a powerhead so now im trying to heal that one so i dont lose it. Meanwhile the clown went back to the smaller ones. What a crappy situation!! You should try buying a bigger one it really seemed to work before the nem got caught in the ph. Good luck hope that helps

Thanks Greg. I'm looking on line right now. I've heard of clowns hosting everything from frog spawn to powerheads. I'd like to get a larger rock anemone Epicystis crucifer, if I can find one but I have no idea if the clarkii will decide to move it on over.

Welcome to my life with my clowns LOl.. I have a 13 year old pair of ocellaris that have killed every nem, hammer, frog, torch that has hosted them forever. They get so aggressive when breeding that either the nem will take a hike or the euphyllia(spelling) will just die.

I now know that I can't have anything with swaying tentacles in the tank. That have there little stub of a branching hammer (once colony like 10" across) three little branches, That they beat up on a daily basis and little do they know that's the last one they will get LOL..

I think if your specimen is big enough you should be fine as long as your clown is not like mine and constantly attack the base of the nem cause they want to lay the eggs on that one spot.. I swear I think my pair is a little touched in the smart department as they also used to steal all food I gave the nem.. Most other clowns will feed the host mine seem like they try there hardest to steal from it. Most times they wouldn't even eat it lol just spit it out..

Sorry rant over ha ha.

No...that's really interesting and funny. My Clarki will take the food from the nem then return it take the credit for delivery I guess.
I do have a small ocealaris but he isn't yet interested in hosting relationship.

The nem the clarki is fixated in will sometimes shrink, lay flat look dead and then comeback and inflate and try again. The clown does not seem to be going for the foot so that's good. But then, he doesn't have a mate either

I have cinnamon clowns and every nem (3 bubble tips and one long tentacle)ive ever put in they have hosted within an hour

I don't know if clowns have to be a bit larger to host because the small clown 3/4 inch...just hangs out alone

I dont believe it matters the size. I have a pair of percula got as baby's about 1/2" and they took a RBTa as a host at that size.

I've always noticed once the clowns touch the nem for the first time the interest in it becomes like instinct. These baby's were from a local store and they were differing in size a little bit and within a few hours of being in the frag tank that had quite a few BTA's in it I saw one kinda brush up against a tentacle and it was on from there. A little bit at a time it was inside it all happy.. Haven't left it in over a year. They would go to all the different ones in the tank. Now they just have a 2 rainbow roses in a acrylic box that thy call home as all the other nems have been sold.

With my ocellaris I got lucky I guess in my first nano 13 years ago I just added a rose and they found it relatively fast. And have since beat every host into submission either by attacking the foot till it moved (2 RBTA into powerheads) or just perished from the abuse..

But the post above on size I have not noticed a difference in my experience.. Actually saw a breeding thread where a guy had like 30+ babies in a tank all in a nem host. And they were tiny little guys. It was one of the breeding threads on RC..

So your clowns killed your nems ? Tha's disconcerting.

On the other hand, the tale of the 30 clowns in one nem is pretty cool
