Clown Trigger

OK, I just upgraded to a 215 gallon FOWLR tank. My current fish are 1 Volitan Lion, 2 puffers, 1 Lunare Wrase, & 1 Picasso Trigger.

Would a Clown Trigger fit in with those guys? The fish I'm mainly worried about is my Picasso. I figure now is the time to add anything new since they are all still adjusting to the new tank and decor...

I would have to say no from experience as well as what others have said.

Clown trigger are one of the most aggressive trigger out there but some can act like model citizens for a short period of time before they "snap" and kill all others in the tank.

Also, most triggers don't get along with lions because they tend to nip at their spines and then attack the body. If your picasso has yet to do this I would chalk that up to luck and NOT introduce another trigger to the mix.

Hope that helps :)

I would also say no to the clown trigger with your mix..... I have to agree with BigDee.

What kind of Puffers do you have with your lion, those are usually a No with lions also.....lol I am inquiring about a Dogface being added with my lions & Pinktail right now.

I think with your Picasso & 2 Puffers you can feel luck that lion has not been picked at, I know I feel lucky with my Pinktail & lions but question pushing it with a dogface.....lol

Totally agree with ^^^.

If you have two of the larger puffers, I would stop where you are. You'll have 5 pretty big fish in a 215g as adults.

But if you were to add anything, go with a small moray. You have 5 fish in the water column, so a moray wouldn't interfere with their swimming as it would stay on the bottom.

i agree ,i wouldn't put a clown trigger in with the huma (picasso),it would probably be an all out war! but then again it might not ,but i wouldn't risk it!

is the only way to have a clown trigger then really is to keep it by itself? If so, what's the smallest tank that would be acceptable?

I guess that you may be taking a risk with Clown triggers as some people have had bad experiences....however-

I have had 2 clown triggers in 8 years ( one currently) and I have never had a problem with them. I actually just had to get rid of my blue jaw trigger, because it was whoopin' on the CT and wouldn't let it eat

I also have a friend who has a 500g tank with a full grown 11 year old CT......never......never has it killed a single fish. Maybe they are lucky?? perhaps. I tend to believe that people try to fit a CT into a tank that is much to small and/or a tank that doesn't provide ample rockwork. This is to create "ample territories" for the fish so that they aren't squabbling over a couple of little caves.

I have found that keeping them well fed, providing lots of rock work, and matching its tankmates definately helps in diminishing their aggression.

i just recently sold my 2 inch clown trigger because he could not play nice in several semi to aggressive tank mate situations. they are pretty, but dont share well (hehe, just like me)

I think a CT should go in a tank 8 ft. x 2 ft. at least. Mine got pretty big in my 180g, and I can't imagine having an active trigger like that at 12" or more in a 180g.

Re: aggression. I pretty much agree with Capt. Insano. I've had three CTs, and all three were different. One was nasty, one in the middle, and another pretty mild (for a trigger). You can keep them with other fish, but the other fish, in my opinion, have to not be easily intimidated yet not want to start fights. As an example, the puffer in my avatar always backed off from my CT when my CT was trying to guard food, but still swam around with him the rest of the time, no problem, no fights, no fear.

They are great fish, but remember they get 20" in the wild and probably 15" in a tank, so they need a big tank. They are not like groupers or lions of that size who sit around a lot. CTs swim a lot , always cruising around if they have the room to do so. They are beautiful animals and deserve the room they need to enjoy their lives as best they can in a tank.

Thanks everyone. I've decided against it. My Picasso is playing nice right now. The last thing I want to do is stir him up so he then becomes a problem. I'll just stick with the one trigger!
