\Clownfish/ 29 Gallon BioCube Tank

Peer pressure....peer pressure...

Then when I get my bigger tank I will pressure you all to join me on that adventure as well.

Just have read this thread in almost it's entirity. I was given this BC29 as is. Picture attached. I have had SW tanks (FOLR) but the last was 8-10 years ago. I am in the cleaning up process. I read about the black foam sponges in the over flow. I am assuming those are the ones that you have removed. I have two media chambers, one with filter pads cut to size that remove phosphates and one that is carbon. I also have a bag of Chemi-pure in there. The only fish is the clown. I have added a few hermits and snails to start clening things up. I had to remove one power head, no flow at all from it. Like I said, it was free, as is. The hood lights don't work. He had a 90w LED of some sorts hanging from the ceiling. No temp scale on the fixture at all. When I moved it all the rock and corals came out in buckets. The sides were cleaned of algae. Pumps were all broke down and cleaned. Fresh SW from the LFS was mixed with the exsisting. He could not tell me when he did his last water change. This pic was taken after the tank was rebuilt and filled. I am not sure what I am looking at in the picture but the stuff is everywhere. I have ordered test kits and should be delivered today, so I have no water parameters at this time. LED lighting was delivered today, so that will be put into place this evening. I am thanking you all in advance for my future questions with this BioCube.

Looks good so far, you sure have tons of Xenia ::) just keep an eye on the parameters and do a water change to start cleaning it up!

Tons of Xenia and tons of nice looking torch coral.

Once you get situated, you can use the xenia as nutrient export (i.e. sell or toss them out to remove nutrients from your tank), and the torches are beautiful, but you'll need to dial the new LEDs way down at first, and could probably sell/trade some of the torch coral heads for new corals with others or at the LFS.

Thanks for the suggestions on Xenia removal. This guy let them get out of control. As far as removal, is there an ideal way, cut v. pull? Also, I am including a pic of the overflow skimmer. Are these the black sponges everyone is refering to as a sourse of nitrates/nitrites? If so, is the recommendation to remove them and leave the chamber empty?

Either wash them every two to three days, or remove them entirely.

Yea, I always took a razor to the bottom of the stalk, and either tossed them, or if I wanted to turn them into frags to sell/trade, I would either rubber band them to a rock or wedge the stalk between two rocks.

Absolutely. I use it for my skimmer (Aquaticlife 115). You can use it for LR, but I have to caution you that that chamber will likely settle the most detritus (since it's the first chamber that detritus would hit) and if the chamber is filled with LR rubble, there will be almost no way to remove the detritus, so it will sit there and rot in the bottom.

I would say use a media bag there, but the problem with that is that the flow mostly goes over that chamber and into the next chamber from the top. That's why it works well for a skimmer. Maybe a media reactor like the CPR Nano tumbler/reactor would work well there, since it doesn't need flow, but I'm not sure if it would fit in the width of the chamber. It's a tough call.

You could even just leave it empty and use it as a settling chamber that you know most of the detritus will settle there, so you vacuum there to make it easy?

Mine has my heater in it and the intake of my skimmer. It is an easy clean up when I get back there to get the gunk out...

Hello Peeps!
Still swimming here. I have been really busy with work recently and have been extremely tired afterwards, leaving me with no motivation to get online LOL!

The tank is doing very well. I have not made any new purchases since my last update here but have been planning to sell the flame angel to get smaller types of fish. The Corals are still growing and coraline is slowly spreading. :)

I have also been planning on selling the whole tank set up to start again but with an even larger cube. Things are still in the air but I might just go ahead and go big.
