clownfish and bangaii

I'm just wondering if it would be possible to put a clownfish pair and bangaii cardinal pair in a 29 gallon tank and have themboth have fry and grow the fry in a sectioned off 10 gallon tank. Like the clowns breed with each other and i move their fry down to one half of the 10 and the bangaii breed together and i put their fry in half the 10. So im just wondering if they would mate in the same tank?

I have a pair of banggais and a pair of maroons in a 40. The clowns have not laid yet but the banggais have mated and are about to have their first batch. I don't think there would be any issue with them breeding in the same tank.

However, I don't think you will be able to raise the young in the same 10 gallon :/
Due to the number of fry that hatch from clowns and the fact that they have a larval stage that requires different food than the banggai fry would mean you would have to have a solid separation so the food doesn't go to waste in the opposite side. Not to mention that with a decent survival rate you will quickly overcrowd at least the clown side which will lead to increased fighting amongst the young.

That is correct you do not want clownfish fry and the cardinal fry in the same 10gallon tank not even with a tank divider. There may times when you will have up to 100 clownfish fry at one hatching and that would not be enough space for them plus the feedings, air supply heater that has to be in the tank.

I have a 40g reef tank with a breeding pair of cardinals and a pair of clowns that are still a little young. Cardinals are vary tough to judge when to catch the male. If you catch him too early you will have a great chance of having under developed fry and if you try to time it just right you may be a day to late and the male would have spit the babies in the tank and chances of getting any of them before your pumps or other fish get them would be slim. Every time I try to catch my male he spits the babies and I have to tumble them at that point to keep them alive.

If you are serious in breeding cardinals you need a tank that you can have a removable barricade, so that when the male is holding you can coral him into one side of the tank with out stressing him out too much where he can settle down and spit the babies when he is ready.

I'm not saying it can't be done it just takes a lot more work. Same goes for your clowns. In a community tank its really hard to get clowns lay eggs where you want them too which forces you to stay up at night fishing for fry. Once again it can be done it just takes alto more work.

As for your 10g tank idea. It may produce a fey babies but it will be alto more work then its worth if you get anything out of it.

Unfortunately I think you are just setting your self up for a lot of frustration and little success.

Ok thanks for the feedback and info. I havent bought any clownfish to pair but i did buy three cardinals which i hope to eventually breed. I like your idea jaypilot of using a removeable divider. Would i be able to raise just the bangaii fry in a ten?

I personally use scoop out the cardinal fry and put the inside of nursery box for about two weeks wile feeding them baby brine shrimp. I also add a little fake plant for them to hide in. But with that being said I normaly do not follow the masses on a lot of things and the masses are using a 10g tank just fine. Best advise is to feed BBS often and if you do not know how to decapsulate them do a Google search and learn how its much safer for the fry and will save you a lot of time.
