I want to set up a tank to breed clowns. It will be a 20 gallon and I want to get an orange ocellaris and a black ocellaris. I know they are the same species, but will they breed successfully?
I thought it would create a cool color hybrid that I could sell. Lol my LFS friend said he would give me 2 bucks a fish that I could raise for a couple of weeks. There's not much profit in doing this, but at this point any money I get would be useful.
Yeah the guy said he would take them after I had raised them for about a month. I got the numbers mixed up. He said I would get $2 for breeding damsels that he sold me. They were laying eggs in the store an I asked about them and he told me I could sell the fry to him. I was pretty sure I could get more money for the clowns.
breeding is easy once they paired. rearing them is quite hard.
it's pretty cool to see them hatched though. I have not able to rear any yet.
you will need to culture rotifers to feed the fry after they hatched. Then after a few weeks they will be able to eat brine shrimps. here are some info you can read. Good luck
Damsels are really easy to get to breed . I have breeding pair of yellow tails that lay every 7-10 days. as soon as one clutch hatches there is a new set of eggs usually within two days. the hard part is raising the fry. They are smaller than clownfish fry and require the ss strain of rotifers which are for the most part difficult to come by and die easly. I got mine at a local college who just happenes to have them for now as food for a research project. By the time you spend $30 or more on rotifers and stuff to set up the tanks your not going to make any profit off of damsels. I raise them for the challenge and fun of it. Out of a clutch of 50-75 that i catch from a hatch maybe 10 make it past meta. then i usually end up giving them away. Clowns on the other hand you can actually make a little money on if your lfs is willing to work with you. I raise clarkii clowns also. out of a clutch i can usually catch 100-120 fry. half of that dies off usually overnight. After meta I usually have 25-30 small clowns left. They use the L strain rotifer which is larger and more common to get. Reeds has them in stock almost always for $20 per million i believe is what it is. I sell the clowns to my lfs for $8 a piece and he sells them for $16. But almost all my earnings goes right back into my tank. As to your pairing question yes it will work to pair the b&w with the regular. I've seen several pair like that and usually the fry look like the female
