clownfish breeding

i was wondering, if a clownfish pair were hosting an rbta, would the ceramic tile trick still work, or would they lay the eggs close to the rbta? thanks.

my pair of tomatos laid the first clutch on the glass right next to the BTA they host in and after that hatch i stuck the tile where the eggs were and next clutch was dead center of the tile

Its hard to tell. They have their own minds. With my Occs I had to put the tile under the anem where they were laying.

How can you tell your pair are ready to start breeding? My female looks huge in the belly and from what I have read is displaying tendencies of getting ready to breed like biting at the rock next to the BTA she is hosted in and fanning the rock with ther tail and fins so is the male. The problem is this rock has the BTA attached to it so how do I move the fry or eggs if they do lay them on this rock?

Yes it sounds like they will Habs. You'll have to catch the fry this time if your going to raise them.

Any reccomendations on trying to catch them if they do actually get that far? Also how long before they do spawn from the point they are at currently? They have been acting like this for about 5 days.

You should look into getting Joyce Wilkerson's book called "Clownfishes." It has tons of info on the lifecycle of clowns, breeding, rearing, etc. It also tells different ways to catch the little buggers after they hatch. You could concentrate them with a flashlight and scoop them out with a cup or bowl or use a siphon. You could also construct a "larval catcher" (The Clownfishes book shows how)

Thanks Shann I have been looking around the local book shops but none have it in stock so I still search every week looking for it.

You can order it from chapters.

It may take about 4 weeks to get it. I got mine at Big Al's. However it was priced at 59.99. Chapters was 24.99. So I got them to price match it. They didn't want to but it's their policy.

There's no real way of telling when they are going to spawn...clownfish can stay in that state for extended periods of time, depending on circumstances.
The only real indicator I've ever noticed is that the female will extend her ovipositor a day or two before actually laying the eggs (look for a small white "tube", about 1mm long, near her anal fin.) Other than that, it's hard to tell.

I saw that the other day and just figured she was expelling waste but I have not seen any eggs or anything so maybe she is just priming herself who knows I guess we wait and see.
