Clownfish hosts

It depends on the type of clown you have. The clown may not host it either. Mine prefer some of my corals and wont host anything else.
:)

oc clowns are harder to get to host than true perc per say...my oc pair hosted in my finger coral till i got rid of it for real estates reasons. they now sleep on top of my power head

I think you might be putting the cart ahead of the horse here a bit...
How big is your system?
How old is your system?
What else is in the tank?

You need to look at your tank and determine what type of Anemone (if any at this point) your system can provide a home for.
I think many neglect to take into account just how big Anemones can get. A 1 year old BTA can easily overwhelm the floor of any 18" wide tank and in anything less than around 75G it can get pretty crowded for "non Anemone" safe fish. (and these are a small species)
BTA's are easier to come by captive bred (and very hardy by Anemone standards).

I think you stand the best chance of success if you stick with the basic rules for these really neat symbiont's.

A 1 year old tank, captive bred Anemone, and lots of reading :)

Toadstool works for me :)

he asked what would host clowns BESIDES the anemone. I took that as he's not getting an anem. :)

but personally i dont think that its that hard to find a host for ocellaris clowns. I've had 3 pairs of clowns now. All were ocellaris, and this is my only black ocellaris clown pair. They've all hosted in a toadstool for me.

Awww I see the alternate reading, I just assumed another Anemone, my bad....

then it is a crapshoot.... powerhead, frogspawn, or nothing at all? :)

Most of clownfish except maroon (maybe) would most likely host frogspawn, hammerhead, toastool, hairy mushroom and flowerpot corals as a subtitute for an anenome. False and true percs clown will host whatever they want in the tank...eventhough you have the listed corals above in the tank...they might choose a powerhead, piece of liverock or veggie clip ect... You just never know but if you have one of those corals, they'll mostlikely choose it to host it in time . They will not jump to the coral right away so be patient.

What are some good alternative clownfish hosts besides BTA?

So, I think we need more info to answer this question.
Lights, tank size, how long been set up, etc.

My female cinnamon clown hosts my rock/flower anemone, my tiny juvi/male "picked on" cinnamon clown recentely took a liking to my frogspawn :)
