Clownfish/nem tank

I just picked up a deep blue 74 gallon cube, rimless reef ready tank.. 24x24x30

Unsure what I will do for sump/fuge atm

I'd like to make it a clownfish/ nem tank.. kinda like what I seen on a brs video... looked like 10 or 12 clowns and a bunch of btas in one tank...

But from what I have ready everyone says only one pair can live in the same tank.. unless it's BIG..

But the brs tank was pretty small..

Anyone out there do this?
Or does anyone have any sugestions?

I'm gonna start setting the tank up this weekend.. so it will be a while before I can put any nems in the tank.. so I want to Learn as much as I can beforehand..

I have 3 clowns ( I know everybody says you cant... but they have been together for 5+ yrs).

In the video below the 3rd (black and white is in the upper left of the nem). Oh and he never gets picked on by the other 2. They seem to ignore him.

Its actually 3 RBTA (Rose Bubble Tip). Split at 6mo, again at 6mo, stopped feeding and have had 3 for 3yrs (in the same spot - yeah team! )

Oh and the 2 larger clowns (orange and bw) spawn every month on the rocks around the nem. None of the fry ever make it but fun to see the clowns tend the eggs.
 
In a traditional tank that is longer than wider. The fish have more distance to get way if being chased. In a cube not so much.
 
For 3yrs or so I had 5 midnight cs & one orange/white. The O/W was dominant, eventually paired w a M, laid eggs so frequently (immediately eaten by tangs) that she stressed & died.

I went thru 2 nems w this bunch, in both cases no bonding, nems died.

Hung onto 5 Ms a while longer, but last yr gave them to friend, and put in pair of Maroons + LTA. Only ONE ma bonded w LTA, and, after a month or so, other ma (The Murderer) savagely forced him out of LTA (over & over), then ripped him to pieces right in the front of DT. The poor nem sucked itself up & detached, just rolled around tank. Tried re-homing, no dice.

A buddy is about to split his rose BTA, and I’m gonna give The Murderer another shot. I have a sweet new sump, so hopefully water is better for nem. (tests much better)

Moral: Clowns can be polite AND savage, and don’t always bond w Anemone!
 
BRS followed the same example of a harem tank as Moberts, which they used juvenile clowns all from the same clutch, that is the key for long term success of a harem.

As to clowns accepting nems, the whole key here for assured hosting is match the clown to the type of anemone it would be found in the wild.

We see all the time comments like above posted, but when given a natural host anemone hosting happens pretty much immediately, and this is regardless of tank bred or wild caught clowns.
 
This time I read clown/nem thread on R/C first. Supposedly rose bta + maroon can "˜work', but I realize there are no guarantees, so here's hoping!

I'll be satisfied if both survive (MC is 2+yrs old) and are healthy & happy.

Well, BTA is a natural host match to maroon, so it should go straight to it, and in fact maroons are so eager to take a host they will usually accept any nem given pretty quickly.
 
Ohhh.. I didn't know they all had to be from the same clutch... anyone know about how to order clowns like that?or know of any breeders?

I have 2 osc. Clowns in my 90 gallon lps/softie tank..
The lil male hosts my small rbta.. and the female hosts in my lta..

My goal for this new tank is a bunch of different colored btas... with a bunch of clowns..

Plus.. ckownfish tank is deff bachelor pad brownie points lol

Thanks! V encouraging info. I don't want to hijack OP's thread, but why d'ya think The Murderer forced the other Maroon out of LTA (and then butchered him)? They'd been together in tank 4 mos, in LTA 2 mos - the violence was sudden. Just curious, would like to learn from my mistakes.

I don't know an answer for your question... I'm sure someone here will know though..

I have read though that maroons are pretty aggressive
 
In its natural environment, clowns rarely leave their anemone and secure an area which approximates 1 m square. Maroons can be very agressive, whereas ocellaris are usually the tamest. When pairing, you need to have a known female (the largest) and either a known mature male (that's about half the size) or sexually immature (usually about half to three quarter inch). While there has been success in mixing, the risk of not pairing or worse, death through harassment can be of higher risk, the farther you drift from similarities.
The most successful pairing is ocellaris, large female, half the size male, or multiple sexually Imatures, same colour, same pattern. They love BTA's
 
A few yrs ago, I had 1 ocellaris, 5 midnights ("˜rescued' from friend). 2 nems came & went - this was b4 I had a sump. The O mated w a M. They laid eggs many X, which the Tangs promptly ate. O died suddenly (stress from so much egg laying??), 5 Ms did fine. I re-homed them.

Then: 3 yrs ago, got pair of Maroon/Gold Bars. Both tiny, equal n size, mo in QT (20g) did fine. In DT, one got noticeably larger, still got along. 4mos w/o nem. Introduced LTA, they were in it within 2wks. 2mos in LTA, then, suddenly, larger C ran smaller C out of nem?! Sm C kept trying to go back to nem, no dice.

Then, lgC ripped smC to pieces right in front of DT. So fast, we couldn't catch either one. THEN lta sucked itself up & died lingering death?! Tried to re-home, it didn't revive in (much more X friend's tank) either.

Now I just have The Murderer. He's really thriving & has gotten much bigger these past 2 yrs. I don't dare try to introduce another Clown, but I am on track to get a sweet RBTA I'm hoping he'll bond w.

It's an unsolved tank murder mystery. sigh

A nasty female by the sounds of it!
There are cases where this works, but I have found its the exception, not the rule...

I've got a mixed reef as well.. exactly why I need to charge 5 bucks for any hijack lol

Your sig. States that you run a simplicity protein skimmer... I just got a simplicity dc120 this weekend... How do you like yours?

I haven't installed mine yet... but it looks like a jebao oral box skimmer renamed...pump and controller both look like jebao as well

Well... you can *try* & get 5 bucks outta me, but since I just forked over $250 to friend today for enormous RBTA (his split), it might get messy lol

We like the simplicity, so far (4/5 mos) doing great, v easy to clean, imo!

So The Murderer is a she! All this time, I thought "˜he' might not have transitioned to female, since the pair hadn't started egg laying (although there was notable size difference). Either way, he/she is now a singleton 4evr.

I can't wait till my rbta gets big...
It's still pretty small..and not red either... for whatever reason... it went from red at the store... then bleached.. now green with light purple tips... is post a pic.. but all my pictures went for a swim...with my phone.
