My mated ocellaris pair (male is black/white, female is orange/white) spawned tonight. Here is a video of their ritual.

They wanted to enjoy the Grammys! I forgot about the noise in the background when I took the video. Wish I could substitute bubbling noise like everyone elses videos! lol

only one question was the male eating the eggs?

The male uses its mouth to blow water on the eggs to keep them aerated. He'll also uses his fins to fan them to keep them clean and aerated. It looks like he's eating them but he's very careful and vigilant to keep them alive.

hey so is it possible for something to eat the eggs or are they perfectly safe on the tile?

It is possible something could get to the eggs to eat them but the parents, especially the male, are very protective of the eggs. A snail got a little too close to the tile and the female actually picked it up and moved it about 6 inches away. This is the 5th batch on this tile and there haven't been any problems.

With a black Male and a Orange Female what are the results?

I posted this same question a while back and received all kinds of answers about the color so I guess I'll have to wait and see for myself!

How did you train them to spawn on the tile?

The first time they spawned, they laid the eggs on the tank glass in one corner (where they would usually hang out when the lights were off). After the spawn and realizing I could not catch the fry in the tank after they hatched, I placed the tile in the same corner and they immediately took to it, cleaning and then spawning on it. I remove the tile the night of the hatch and place it in a nursery tank for the hatch. After the eggs hatch, I clean the tile and place it back into the main tank for the next spawn.

What kind of tile is that?Is it porcilin, pottery?

I believe it's a clay tile with a glazed surface on the other side. I picked this type of tile because of the pattern on the underside (side up in the video) and was just rough enough for the eggs to adhere to.

The eggs from this spawn hatched last night and was a success. I just hope I have enough rotifers to keep the fry fed. We'll see what happens!
