Clams can be really twitchy sometimes. Once the mantle starts to recede down from the inside if the shell it's a goner - at least, I've never had one recover. I'm currently having that problem with a 10" deresa that I've had for years. No idea why.
Stinks about your Derasa. I'm still lamenting and wondering what happened, but I'll probably never know. I'm wondering if something got to its foot after I moved it down to the sand. There was a flat piece of rock underneath it, but there was still room for critters to get in there. This wasn't the case when I had it cradled on that perch. The cradle contoured to the Clam perfectly.
Ugh. My first loss with this tank so far. (Knocks on water)
Sucks.....I lost a gold maxima the same way a few years ago. In my experience the second a shrimp gets near it.....call 911! It was probably near dead before the clam took interest in it, pods showed up to do thier work and clown found a new source of food. I had a clam scrubber fuge that fell prey to my wifes inadvertent use of WD 40 on a squeky door hinge. Man i was mad.
