Clowns First?

The posts that start out "I made an impulse buy" always make me laugh.

Well, here I am. A pair of clowns was well down on the stocking list, but I had an opportunity and they were so cute. So now I have two juveniles black and white Ocellaris clowns. One small and one very small. Just did the first TTM tank change and they are doing great.

I want to have a fire fish, a blenny and a Kaudern's cardinal in the tank. Can I add the clowns first, or should I keep them in QT until after I acquire and add the others? The tank is a 120 that I'm setting up as a replacement for a 150 that cracked, so no fish yet.

I know clowns get territorial when they get older, just not sure how much I need to worry about now.

Thanks!

I always start with clowns if they are young. Most are captive bred and are hearty for those young tank hiccups that all too often happen. With clowns you can also take a tank a several directions of levels of aggression. I am sure others have not had the positive experience I have, but I don't think they are a bad choice. In that size tank aggression shouldn't be a huge issue unless there are eggs. Good luck.

You should be fine. A clown was the first fish I ever had. Added a second after. The next three fish you want to add are literally the next group of fish I added. They are all doing well together.

If it were maroons I'd say last, and cross your fingers---but ocellaris are quiet sorts, and shouldn't be jerks, even going in first.

I had no issues until they became a bonded pair and then they killed anything i put in the tank. I miss those evil machines of death.. i gave them away to a friend who promptly killed them because he bought fish from Petco and it gave them some funky disease. Now i only own 1 clown and she is very sweet.

Yea, clowns are all great until they bond and start laying eggs.

Then they become... slightly territorial.

My female ocellaris went nuts and would attack anything that entered the tank.

Hand in tank? Bite bite bite.
Siphon in tank? Bite bite bite

Ended up having to get rid of them, which was too bad because the egg laying was cool but a 20g tank wasn't big enough to have aggressive clowns.
