clowns hatching tonight. Couple questions

Half the clutch hatched last night on day 7. about 50 left to hatch. I wasn't ready an they went in the filter. Anyway. I have my fry tank set up now. I will put the pot in later and hope for the best. Should I put rotifiers in the water today or wait till morning after they hatch. Also do I just dump the green water in or should I strain them first? TIA Dave

Dont put the rotifers in tonight, because they wont be able to see them since you will have the lights off. Add them in the morning. You need to strain them.

It is a good idea to green the water with some fresh algae, and leave the light on 24-7 until meta.

I put some green water in after I put the fry in the tank just on the first night, and left the light on for the next 24 hrs. I only lost a couple of fry the first night.

Thanks. I just checked on them and they all hatched. took about 1.5 hours after light out. will keep it dark till tomorrow morning. or should I put the light on and add rotifiers now

Sorry for the loss, can you describe your setup for us?

Ya, 10 gal fry tank with 3 gal of water from the stock tank
heater at 80* bubble wand on both ends of the tank. blacked out all four sides. white bottom. no ammonia . Water was in the tank for 1 hour before I put the clay pot in. hatch at 8.pm dead at 6am. tank was new. washed it out with plain water. will use bleach before next hatch. anything I missed?

not that I see.

did they seem to have die by the heater? or do you have the bubble wand over the heater so they can't rest on it?

did you have a good supply of air bubbles going over the eggs when you placed them in the tank?

yes bubbles under the heater. they hatched. saw them swimming at 8 pm. All dead by 6 am. I just had a new clutch yesterday. I will clean everything with bleach before next hatch. will also connect heater to the apex for better control. I just got another temp sensor for that.

I used to use parent tank water too and I had issues with fry dying. I stopped and started using new salt water and am having 100x better results. You may also want to increase your water volume from 3g to 5g or 6g to start. It's a better buffer for the larvae.

What's your process of feeding your rotifers and then dumping them to larvae tank?

I will try fresh salt water and increase to 5 gal. I haven't used rotifiers yet. I was about to add but the fry were all dead. I have 2 cultures going and are very dense. I'm feeding rotifiers RG Complete. I'm removing 1/3 per day. I was going to strain through a coffee filter when I add to the fry tank

The coffee filter with work ok for now but it will trap too much debris. Go here and get one of these instead.

It will work so much better. Get a 120 & a 53. Pour your rotifers thru the 120 and then the 53 collector and then rinse them and dump in larvae tank. Good luck and let us know how it works for you.

is there a reason you pour your rotifers through the 120 seive 1st?

It's to get rid of everything else in the rotifer bucket that bigger than the size of the actual rotifers. You would be surprised how polluted a 5g rotifer bucket is. I know it's an extra step but its well worth the effort :)

If your cultures are dense, you need to harvest continually, otherwise you get "old" rots and they no longer breed and your culture will crash.

I like that idea using two strainers I think I will do the same because I get debris in mine too and I don't understand how it gets so dirty even with a lid on it. Thanks for the tip.
