In my opinion, there has been what I consider a positive trend recently where we are sharing frags more with each other at the meetings and that's a good thing. I especially love sending new members home with stuff.
However, because this seems to happen in place of a raffle, the club coffers remain empty and the club is unable to purchase new corals. The limits the availability of new corals for all of us.
What do you think of a new approach which is part raffle, mostly frag exchange? All the frags present are placed on the table and tickets are drawn. The currently drawn ticket holder gets their pick of one item on the table. There are two ways to get a ticket - bring a frag or purchase one for $10.
The upsides to this are that people are encouraged to bring frags as it is a free entry to the raffle, anyone who doesn't bring a frag can still buy in for a very low cost ($10), and the club gets a small amount for future raffle items.
The downsides are that the amount of revenue for the club is very small, and someone might be tempted to bring a few brown zoos for a chance at a piece of pink mojito chalice. We could establish entry standards to combat the latter.
In terms of revenue, the old school raffle we used to do did generate significantly more revenue. If we had 10 people purchasing $20 in tickets, we had $200 with which to buy new, possibly higher end corals for the next meeting / raffle.
In the proposed system, if 7 members brought frags and 3 purchased tickets, the club would get $30. That's a lot less than $200 but infinitely more than the zero the club currently has. Even if we were only able to introduce a new coral to the club every couple months, this in my mind would be preferable to never being able to bring anything new in.
What do you guys think? Are you happy with merely giving frags out or should we try to generate at least a small amount of revenue for the club to bring more new corals in? Or would you prefer the straight up raffle we used to do? (this has been more difficult recently with the low attendance at meetings)
