Club meeting ideas

Kreeger1

KING LEAR
We've still got a few dates to fill with Speakers or DIY type projects. I've sent out a few emails to see who is willing to speak at a meeting this year.

I like the idea of a diy, calcium reactor club meeting
I like the idea of Steve Tyree doing his speech on Coral farming for profit.
I like the idea of having a meeting were maybe 3-4 members do a slide show of there tank, Mike's tank really stands out in my mind. lol

Lets her what the club wants, WHo what and where!
Erik

If anyone feels qualified to do this, I'd love to see a DIY session with acrylics in general. I'd love to feel comfortable making holders/brackets/boxes for all my projects.

Might also be nice to have a "project of the month" slideshow. Sometimes simple things like auto-topoff systems, DIY stands and canopies, easy water change plumbing, and frag/QT tank setups would be great to see. I'm always amazed when I see some creative setups that people have and wonder "why didn't I think of that?".

I know I'm new, so this is coming from a newbie perspective, but adding a fish and/or coral of the month to the site would be great. I'd be happy to volunteer to write one up for October if anyone has ideas. Mostly a research paper with big pictures. =)

Some quick ideas I came up with:

Rob Toonen
Randy Holmes-Farley
Ron Shimek
Julian Sprung
Walt Smith

An update on the progress of getting a new aquarium in Cleveland

DIY foods / culturing live food

Photographing your tank (do we have any professional photographers?)

Ozone in the aquarium (pros/cons)

Pests in the aquarium

Eric,
Congrats on taking over Program Director. Great person for the job!

It's been a while since we've done an eastside or westside tank tour. That might be fun.

John

I'm gald to see you took the job congrats!!
Seems to me you dont need my advice you're off to a good start.
Just something that hasnt been done in the last 3 yrs...say keep it fresh.

One thing the club used to do is set up a presentation that was shown at general interest aquarium clubs and other marine clubs. At one point there were about a half a dozen of these. If we do get something set up by several members for a C-SEA presentation, it might be adaptable for the "road".

We have a photographer coming in for our March 24th, 2007 meeting. Maybe we could share the expenses and have him do two presentations? If you guys are interested, let me know.

I like the idea of seeing other people's setups to. That would be cool to setup up a night and stop by a few members homes on one side of town then on another night go to the other side of town. I would be willing to show my 300 Gallon reef setup That I just built into my basment wall ,if anyone would be interested. Its also a great way to get ideas and meet people. I also have a Nice HARLEY bar I built into the basement as well for refreshments after!!!!!!

How about a presentation from a vendor(national or local) or well known hobbyist about pests on corals and how to treat them. Alot of people still ask alot of questions about red bug, AEFW, monti. Nudis etc. Who out there is the most knowledgable on this subject right now??

I would like to point out that there are lots of newer members (like me) who have never seen any of the main speakers at all. I would love to hear Shimek, Calfo, Holmes-Farley or any of the others. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing Borneman speak last year and I know there are guys in the club who have the luxury of being able to travel to IMAC, NEOMAC, etc... and listen to the big names all the time. I would think these speakers could be a very big draw for new membership and a benefit for those of us who haven't heard them yet.

Most of the decisions for the club seem to be made by members who have been in the club for a while and have lost touch with that "newbie feeling". I just wanted to point out that not everyone has "been there and done that" and sometimes the "regular speakers" are perfect for the club.

I would love to see a DIY calcium reactor! I could use one and LOVE to DIY. I would also like to see if there's a chance to buy some of those parts for the kalk reactors that CORA did a while ago with GEO and assemble them here. Maybe GEO wouldn't mind coming up and leading the meeting for us.

My 2 cents...

The real problem Kevin, id that the "Big names" like Sprung, Delbeek, Calfo , Shimek(oh do we really need to hear his garbage again??) Boreneman, Steven Pro, Etc. they cost money to bring to town. Steven Pro has been one of our great allies, since he is so close. I'd personally like to hear something from Calfo, since he is Steves buddy, wink wink.

And it probably wouldn't cost the club an arm and a leg to get him here.

We do need to have a few things for the imtermidiates and advanced hobbyists too. They are just as informative, and probably MORE people learn from those speakers/programs than the newbie ones.

I Agree with Mike, We don't need to Hear Rons nonsense again. Just looking out for ya. I've been in the club for looooong time, I've got a good feel for what or who will be good for a meeting.
:)
Erik

All ideas are welcome and will be considered. Lots of good will come from this thread

I understand about the costs involved with bringing nationally known speakers in. When we discussed increasing the membership dues one of the main things talked about was that we could bring in more costly speakers with the additional funds raised. Your comment "Shimek(oh do we really need to hear his garbage again??)" is a perfect example of what I was saying in my first reply to this thread. Did you find his talk interesting the very first time you heard it? I think I would like to have the opportunity to be tired of hearing him speak without spending hundreds of dollars to travel to big shows to catch his speach.

I've heard Ron before and its just that bad, Benefit of being a long time member. I've heard stories at the last big show people walked out of his speech. Its one of those things Kevin were your gonna have to trust the people that know whats good or not.
Save your money, we are :)
