CMAS Forum Just for Classifieds Now?

I haven't been on the forum site in a long time, thought I'd drop by and see what's up; but it doesn't look like any there are any discussions any more; just classifieds on page after page.

makes me kind of sad.

I think cmas has its own forum now. And a bunch of active members took thier activity to a different website. Most of the people posting stuff for sale here mainly participate elsewhere now. Due to some falling out with moderators/use of ban stick and consequential hurt feelings of some members.

Phil, a bunch of jerks got themselves banned. They moved to another place where, in my limited experience, discussion is mostly of the sort that got them banned here.

For reef discussion, the other forums here remain outstanding.

In large part, here, it is the effect of many serious hobbyists leaving the hobby/area. You, Jim, David, Chris, Jose, etc etc all gone...

That does seem a little harsh! lol I'm on RC as well as a few other forums. If there's more activity on one site then that's the one I gravitate to. Lately on the CMAS section of RC there seems to be more classifieds than discussion. Part of the reason is that you can just Google any questions you have or get reviews of equipment.

Perhaps it is different these days, but not that long ago there would be endless discussions and debates about a whole host of topics, husbandry, advanced and basic plumbing, equipment modifications, dosing, pest control, etc. etc. not just do you want to buy my skimmer. I really enjoyed that part of the hobby.

Phil that happens everywhere on RC but here. A large crowd took the discussion from reef to sexual innuendo, intolerance and reference to drunkenness etc and got booted. Thus my assessment above

Ok, those guys got banned and now they're off of RC. Why is there still a lack of discussion on CMAS? Did the guys who got banned take all the discussion with them? Seems like it's two different topics we're talking about.

I think there's so many more resources to do your research than one forum. If you want to know about clowns or skimmers or anything else you can Google it and find replies from a huge cross section of reefers. And if you use the search function of CMAS you can see if something was already discussed.

Nobody on here now was here when the forum was substantive and lively?

If all someone wants to do is research in isolation, then there is no reason to join a "community" of others that share interests and thus no need for a forum. To each his own.

Anyway, I asked a question which I think has been answered. It appears that there isn't anything left to do here except maybe embed an mp3 of Taps.

The OP was about why it's all FS threads now rather than discussion. Your reply was about banned members; members who can no longer post anything on CMAS. Why are the members currently on here no longer discussing topics and mostly posting FS threads? IDK. But I don't think the banned members have anything to do with it; they can't post any threads.

A large cohort of experienced hobbyists drove those lively discussions. Recession, people moving or otherwise exiting sharply reduced that core to a small handful. The newcomers turned the discussion to directions causing the rest to leave for the substantive RC forums. Then that wave got banned.

Informed discussion requires people with information and experience.

I and others find that in the Chemistry, SPS, equipment and husbandry forums now but not here.

Pretty straightforward.

Not everyone banned from RC was banned because of "sexual innuendo, intolerance and reference to drunkenness" or being "jerks". That is pretty ignorant, as it only describes a portion of banned members. I know of quite a few members that were banned for absolutely ridiculous reasons, that had to do with reefing, and nothing to do with the references listed above. However, there are quite a few members banned because of those.

ya i agree with ostrow. Most of the time im looking for advice on my tank i seek out the chemistry forum or reef discussions. Localy there is nothing more to find but maybe a good deal on a frag or used equipment sometimes.

True. I should have added, "and refusing to accept that this is a privately run forum with guidelines that you choose to follow should you choose to join."

Phil asked where the discussion went and why it isn't here. As one who has been here over a decade, on RC and in this forum, I believe I accurately captured the essence of the explanation that constitutes a general answer.

Yes, but there are members who followed the rules, and still got banned. You are not including those. I know of multiple cases where other moderators agreed that a member did not break any rules, but because the other moderators were not the original banner, they could not un-ban the member.

There was a period where the mods were extremely egocentric and completely unreasonable with banning and infractions. This led a large group of good members with valuable experience to leave. It seems most of the mods have realized how absurd their actions were, and started being more reasonable (not instantly deleting threads like this and banning the posters). This place is a whole lot better than it used to be. Unfortunately, they already drove away the vast majority of members.

If you review most of the club forums on Reef Central, they usually do center around buying and selling. This makes sense from a geographic standpoint. A club forum has a more narrow geographic focus than the board at large, so the threads mirror that audience to a large degree.

As for "ChipE"'s comments, suffice it to say that the moderators on Reef Central are always willing to review the account of any member whose privileges have been suspended. Most moderators can be contacted at username @ reefcentral . com (removing spaces).
