co45co's fishroom build

I am still a bit new to the hobby with plenty to learn. I've mostly been reading as much as I can here on reef central. But now it is time I finally starting posting what I've been up to (not too much I'll admit). This will be a slow thread as I am starting school right now but I will be doing my best to get as much done as well as post along the way for those interested.

This is currently where my tanks are at the moment; its extremely messy in this picture due to some of the stuff I have moved out of the area I want to build the fishroom

The following three images are of the area of our basement I will/am "cleaning" out. It goes to show just how much stuff can be packed into such a small area....

Then after much tiresome work most of it is cleaned and work can begin on building some insulting walls. The idea I had/wanted is to seal the room off from the rest of the house as much as possible. I really don't want to risk moisture damage to the house. Therefore I chose the pink foam boards for their moisture resistance and relatively cheap price. Then with some simple studs the 4'x8' sheets can be held in place and sealed with caulk at every seam.

The room itself is 22 feet long and about 10 feet 4 inches wide. The ceiling is already insulted with R-19 fiberglass insulation.

After finally getting some time off from work and the house to myself I got a little more accomplished:

Notice I took out the ceiling light; this is because it was an obstacle for the ceiling panels, and I felt it was too much of a fire hazard to have the incoming wire being sandwiched between the foam board and fiberglass.

So far 99.999 % of this has been done by me alone. Things that have yet to be done:
-finish off ceiling and side wall
-seal off room and construct a double door
-caulk every seam (besides keeping moisture in, its to keep bugs out!)
-paint the walls and ceiling
-install electrical (two 30 amp lines)
-construct new stands for tanks of which I will be having a 125 salt (still debating between fowlr or reef), a 33long reef, a 125 freshwater, and some quarantine racks.

Lots to be done still and with school on going progress will be slow but hopefully steady.

If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

the studs are attached to a header at the top. The header is attached to the joists above. I was not allowed to drill into the block walls (by my parents). And no drywall because its too messy, gets wet and molds, and too much extra money, the walls as you see will be painted white and that's it.

Hope that answer's your questions

finally got my water storage tanks today, they are 65 gallons each with a 1.25 inch bulkhead at the bottom, one will be RO/DI and the other for mixing salt.

Well here is an update for anyone who is following this build:
Progress is slow with school going, I hope to go the hardware store tomorrow to get some more supplies. Meanwhile I figured I could show the QT and hospital tank... tanks.....

Got these from my LFS, gave them to me for free, figured they work pretty good. I think I may cut out a few of the partitions to give more swimming room. I'll also have a ten gallon sump I think for some carbon and live rock.

And here is my front of which I will be using that 4x8 sheet of foam/plywood as a door once split in two vertically... its on its side right now. I'm not going for fancy just practical, effective, and workable.

Let me know what you so far, or any questions you may have. Granted, I know this is a slow build thread. But thank you for reading.

Super cool thread. I'm loving this. If I were you, I'd go ahead and cover the walls with something. A cheap alternative is peg-board. Super cheap and you can hang stuff from it. Also, it breathes and it very resistant to moisture (I use them all over my garage). It shouldn't cost more than $75 to cover those walls with it. It comes white, so you don't have to buy paint, which pretty much negates the price of the stuff.

Leigerreign- I already bought the paint awhile ago. I want the paint, so that I can somewhat seal the wood from moisture (hopefully make it last longer). I will have shelving/storage in some areas. I also want to be able to take this room down within a moments notice just in case, so the fewer things there are the better. Thank you for the suggestion though, is greatly appreciated!

I haven't mentioned what tanks I'll have, 33 gal reef, 125 gal fowlr (maybe eventually a reef when I more money), and a 125 gal freshwater community/planted tank; that's it for now.

Damn bro our basement is identical lol yesterday I cleaned out a bunch of crap to the waste! Since is getting ready to do another room which is going to be mine. No fish room though :( since is not my house. Il do my dream set up when I get my crib :)

My DT will be in my room though. I will have my rodi set up in my basement outside my room plenty of space :)

I really like your storage tanks where and how much you got em for?
Tagging along!! Good cool build thread.

CarlitosReef- Ha! this is not my house either. Mainly that why it has to be unattached (can't drill into the foundation for screws) and completely sealed off from the rest of the house. But the storage tanks I got at a local farm/hardware supply store, and they were way cheaper than online especially since I didn't pay for shipping. I got them at 100 dollars a piece.

Well I live with my parents and I'm starting college in January. Looks like the storage barrels are too pricey for me lol

Could you tell the company name which build these water storage? And where to buy it?

I got them at my local Farm and tractor supply called Farm and Fleet, they are made by Norwesco I believe, and they were $100 a piece.

Sorry I have not been updating as frequently as I'd like, but by the end of this coming weekend there should be more pics.

Looking forward to it... I definitely know how it can drag on sometimes!

I got a free tank from a family member and Ive been working for over three to four months to get it up to par! Mostly because I currently have a five month old (our first) needing just a little attention... Do the math and you realize the bad timing :-) (for setting up a new tank of course)
