Yeah, this one is tightly bonded to my youngest. Or is it the other way around? ;)

A couple more. Shaking it out!

the side/backlighting looks nice. Particularly that last image the rope looks like it's glowing!

Gidget and Butthead! :lmao:

Doug, did you have either Gidget or Butthead as a pet before pairing and breeding them, and if so, did you observe much of a difference in "pet value" when they made the transition? My youngest is concerned her sweet baby will turn into a vicious beast if it starts laying eggs.

Louis, yeah, I'm a sucker for backlighting and yield it like a sledgehammer. One day I will learn subtlety. Maybe. I love how it highlights details around edges and separates the subject from the background. Being able to discern little sharply focused feather filaments glowing makes me happy. Even something as mundane as a rope can become more interesting visually when its ragged fibers around the outside are blazing.

While afternoon sun was coming through the window behind the bird at say 11 o'clock from the camera, what one doesn't see is the large white reflector at 4 o'clock and the flash at 8 o'clock. They aren't well balanced but learning to balance multiple light sources is where I'm at.

I confess with all the excellent photos of wild birds people have been posting recently, and the great suggestions on how to obtain them, using a domesticated subject feels a bit like cheating, which is why I didn't post this on Jay's terrific "tips for shooting birds" thread.

nice work with the fill light. I think you're darn close. Hadn't really even thought about it when I looked at the images.

I totally get the backlighting thing. Most of what I shoot is about the light first and the subject second. I look for good or interesting light and then find something to exploit it.

The birds did become less pet-like once they started breeding. The female was always a sweetheart but the male earned his name. It actually started out as Buddy but evolved....

Yep, longing. My dude was Cooter and we had a trick:

"Cooter, what do you say to pretty girls?" and he'd kick up his long, full crest and cat-call them. The funny thing is, I didn't teach him that :D

I was in college and that fluffy dude was the best wingman/bird I ever had.
