I had a couple of coldwater nanos back in the 90's. Pacific northwest stuff. No chiller. Kept in cool basement. The stuff could all survive freezing temps.. including the bat stars. Amazing stuff. The coralline and algae was beautiful.

My personal experience stops at lobster tanks. At one point I worked on maintaining cold water fish and invertebrates in seafood industry. Had a very nice personal lobster tank that sat around for a long time before I sold it. Have regretted selling it from the start. Would make a nice cold water habitat. Some of the north east atlantic stuff is crazy looking. Pacific north west is great. Very colorful and interesting starfish, those are my favorite.

I keep a bunch of coldwater tanks now, everything from tidal anemones to Corynactis spp.

I've even been keeping a baby Giant Pacific Octopus since October when I caught it. (That's him in my avatar picture )

I just got some temperate water pygmy filefish from Japan last week and I'm going out collecting for Pacific stuff in the tidepools during the minus tides this weekend.

Are you thinking of NY native animals? Or Pacific stuff? Or just coldwater from everywhere?

I have thought about doing a Northeast tank as well. Collect stuff from Mass. RI and Ct, urchins, weed, hermit crabs snails, fish, etc
I have not found anywhere to buy stuff probably because no collects it.
You see some of it in the British Isles and such but I have no idea where you can buy it in the States.
