ColdWater Reef

Well I decided to come back to the hobby to do coldwater! It's one of those ecosystem that I haven't done yet so I wanted to try.

Tank measures 22"x15"x12" with 1" thick acrylic!

The interior dimension of the tank (True area) is 20"x13"x11"

I'm keeping this fairly simple-
- Kessil 150 LED for lightning
- 1/10 Chiller for cooling
- Sicce 2.0 pump to pump water to chiller and back in

Water changes will be done weekly since I don't have any skimmer in there.

This is some progress picture of tank being built, the overflow will be a little bit smaller after all is said and done.

But is it bullet proof?:p

Cool build, will be fun to watch, good luck!

I have to ask...why 1"? Is it going to be under pressure or something?

part of it will be for insulation.

The main reason for me is to have no condensation on the outside of the tank. After doing some research, 1" would provide me with enough insulation so that the outside glass will not sweat when the tank is 50~F and the ambient temperature is 80+++ in the summer

Nice acrylic work. I'm tempted to get a micro reefs cold water tank for my next tank.

Are you using colwater marine aquatics to stock it?

Sure am, I'm gonna get a little live rock from them to start the tank when it's set up. I'm still undecided on the rock choices, either doing a custom foam rock, or buying some regular reef rock.

As far as livestock, I think I'm just getting very small stuff (fish (Catalina Goby) / shrimps), small anemones / tunicates, and macroalgae. I'm still trying to see what else is out there in the coldwater world

edit - And some cool looking starfish of course

I was reading this and my first thought was the Catalina goby. Then I got to the last post. That's a beautiful fish. Should be a cool build. (Get it,cause its a cold water tank , get it)
Thank you. I'm here all weekend.

Tank got polished and overflow glued on.

Just need to get bulkhead / plumbing and drill it now!

on the stand

nice...
are you planning to cover the top?
will exposing it counter what your trying to acheive, no?

yup I will be covering the top with a thin lid.

But from what I understand, there will a a buffer above the water surface due to it being cold. And that buffer will help insulate the water also, so the lid isn't completely necessary. I have it just to prevent fish from jumping.

yes, thats what I was refering too... cover = buffer/lid.
Really cool, looking forward!

That is a super nice looking tank! Let me know if you need any ideas for other coldwater livestock :D

Come on, give us a couple ideas.... Some of us I am sure are interested. I have dived in some cold( dry suit cold) spots and saw some crazy things....

Kataro, sweet tank, will be nice to follow along and see what you put in it.

I'm gonna concentrate on getting small invertebrates / macroalgae / and small fishes like Eumicrotremus orbis & catalina goby

Gonna definately grab some anemones / corals from you too! Will give you a call when it's ready to go

Do you have any cool looking shrimps like these
