Collecting angelfish west of Key West with a legend

The hybrid is actually a Potter's/ Fisher's hybrid... just the third known in history... the second is in my freezer after getting infected from where it was needled. The significance of this fish is not in its beauty, but in the fact that it is the only known dwarf angel hybrid between subgenera... potteri is in the Centropyge subgenus and fisheri is in Xiphypops... they are not closely related... and these are probably a result of "accidental hybridization", not active spawning between the two species...

that is interesting John does this mean that the book angelfishes of the world by Kiyoshi endoh is incorrect it has Fisher in the centropyge genus , it is also in centropyge genus in a guide to angelfishes and butterflyfishes by Gerald allen, R steene and Mark Allen.

It was great to finally meet you today in person, John. My family is planning another trip to the Keys (Key West) in June. Your pictures from your most recent Florida Keys dive trip are amazing. For those keeping track, John's private collection of angelfish now exceeds over 40 angelfish!!!

It was great to meet you and everyone in Columbus yesterday... I guess I'll see you in Cincinnati... :)

Wow. Can we see a picture?

I'll take some this week and post them up...

Nice Pictures John. Did all the fishes made it alright? do you have pics of the fish you kept for your tank?

Yeap Rogger they all made it... I posted some pics earlier in the thread...

Yes fisheri is in the Centropyge genus, but the Xiphypops subgenus... the three subgenera within Centropyge are Centropyge, Xiphypops, and Paracentropyge...

Wow! the potters/fisheri might not be famous for its beauty but it's still a very attractive hybrid, imo!

I heard that fishers/flavicaudus are now the same species?

Thanks again everyone... she's a beaut!

Thanks for the photos when is the angel going out of quarantine and in what tank will thy go in

Probably in the subtropical tank eventually after a couple more months in QT... she had crypto not long after I got her so she went through hyposalinity... and is now fully fat and healthy now and eats like a champ...

There was a recent paper... now a few years old actually... that looked at C. acanthops, C. flavicauda, and C. fisheri and basically found them to be color variations of the same species, argueing they should then all be Centropyge fisheri, as that was the nominal species... not accepted by all... much more popular has been flavicauda and fisheri being accepted as the same... further DNA analysis will figure it all out eventually...

Nice catch.

I live in florida and will like to collect my own fish for my tanks I have seen some people that use Barrier nets and looks to be a nice help to catch the fish. I am looking for a Barrier Net does anyone knows where can i get one?

You need to have a permit in order to collect fish

I have the Florida fishing permit and that is what I have read the regulations and the amount of fish i can catch. I just need and idea where can i get a barrier net of how to make one.

Thanks
