collecting at cocoa beach?

anyone know of any spots on east coast, cocoa beach area, that i can go and collect diff. types of macro algaes at? is it even legal? i was thinking somewhere on the bananna river, but wouldn't know where to start. and the places i know of-there are a lot of boats. would you pass from collecting in these areas? the algae will be for a SH tank, and will have no animals/corals in it for a few months. thanks, lawrence

I would go up to the playalinda area if I were doing that. Probably a lot cleaner than the areas nearer to development.

oh cool, i can collect naked then!!!! haven't been over there in about 10 years, but will def. check it out. hope there's still some waves there too. thanks for the suggestion.

I would want to know, and find out if it's legal first. I know picking sea oats is illegal. You would'nt want to get in trouble for a handfull of macro that might cost you a few dollars at an LFS. I would be more concerned what you might get along with it... pathogens..etc.

one of the better areas is by Sebastian inlet and legend has it that there is some good finds behind the hospital off of 520, but I haven't gone there yet.

as far as law you need to find out from the fish and wild life website, certain things are not allowed, but if you have a SW fishing license you can collect.

I just go up to Satellite Beach, one of the rocky beach (Like behind Son on the Beach) in low tide, finds snails, crabs, little fish, all kinds of stuff in tide pools. No one ever bothered me, as long as your not selling it, i think its ok.

Florida fish and game has a great page about what is legal. Im on dialup at work and cant find it wothout searching for way to long, but I know I have seen it. Basically it was a list of what was collectible, how many of each and what was strictly off limits. You do need a saltwater fishing license as well, but iirc there was no tag needed for recreational collecting. If you want to search the forum Im pretty sure i found the link in the tampa club forum here on RC.
