Colonial Hydroids

I found a couple small colonies of colonial hydroids on my rock. Is this common in reef tanks? Or am I the unlucky one?

How should I kill these?

Thanks.

I don't know how common it is but I have them ( at least I have small brownish daisy like polyps reffered to locally as hydroids) and they are a pain . I've seen them take over tanks(fortunately not mine. I don't know of a proven method to erradicate them. I think you have to be persistent. Kalk paste works. I usually take out a piec if I can and scrape the rock down with a dremmel tool. When this is impossible I make a thin patch of aquastick grey expoxy putty and lay it over them.

i got rid of a small patch (maybe 5-8 stalks) by burning them with a lighter. worked, but it bleached the coraline form the LR in that one area... still better than hydroids though.

I won't be pulling out my rock that has them on it. Is it underneath everything else. Would Joes Juice work? The same stuff you use on aiptasia?

joes juice has worked fine for me. Had a few groups of 5-10 little fella's each. Got a bit trigger happy with it on one though and I have a beautifully white patch on the rock. Cleanest bit in the tank :)

With Kalk Paste (aka Joe's Juice) you may find you need to repeat the application a coulpe times, as I've found they come back (albeit in smaller numbers)in a couple weeks. good luck!

I had better luck with Mrs. Wages Pickling Lime mixed with RO because I could get a thicker paste than with the joe's juice.

Not sure if I had "colonial" hydroids, but I sure had hydroids, 2 types. One of them took over the lower part of the tank, killing and damaging lots in the process. I was feeding lots of newly hatched brine, one of hydroids favorite foods. I'm not sure if I starved them out, but they are now gone. I quit feeding everything except the fish and they got only mysis shrimp and in about 3-4 months the hydroids were gone.
