Colonial Rock Anenomes ?

I go snorkeling alot, sometimes on the west coast of florida from naples to tampa. In several locations where large rock piles stretch out from the beach out into a 3-5 feet of water i often find large colonies of small anenomes. I have found them in several colors (green, yellow, gray, tan, spotted) and sizes (all under an inch across at the very largest mostly smaller) but they are often pounded in the surf zone and the tenticals stick to anything. This last trip i brought a few back to see if i can grow them in a tank. i'll post some pics soon but i was wondering if anyone else has seen them before? There dont appear to be zoanthids but small colonial anenomes.....

care to share any good spots over in this area for such activities? I have not found any snorkling places in the area.

hard to say without a pic, from the colors sounds like a sunburst but they are typically found on reefs not the surf. The description fits about ten different anemones, with a pic I could tell you the exact one.

i have seen these in deerfield beach in a red orange color about the size of a half dollar. they are exposed to the air for hours when low tide comes around. i didnt collect any though.

RYAN.....post the pics already....I would love to see what they look like.....that just gave me an idea for my nano.....

I really would like to know if they are near Tampa, I'm going there this weekend and would to find some more.

I have found a few at Sebastian Inlet, I found a purple one and a white one last weekend. They are bout about 1 1/2" across.

REDDAWG43 Has anybody seen these anemones down here in South Fla....

easy to find if you know where to look

I've had this one for 6 months or so, I used to feed it at night, when it opened, now it's neglected and seemingly doing well. Pretty little creature but stings anything it touches.Good thing is it hasn't moved once.
During the day they are closed up in crevices, or holes in the rock. I flipped over some loose rubble and there they were, attached to the underside. Found them anywhere from 2-15 ft. Collected this one a few miles north of Delray

yay! I love this game!

ok the "purple one" those range in different colors from brown to red, they are very sticky, usually tend to be nocturnal but can be trained otherwise, beautiful anemone, the foot is covered with small projections making it apear almost fuzzy, ill have the Sci. name for ya later, but its common name is the red wart anemone.

their is a few other anemone's local to florida that match that discription. one is called the sun anemone, its small, colonial because it splits like crazy, lol. color tends to vary from gray to golden brown, and from the rim inward towards the mouth are yellow/gold stripes which give it its name.

also dont forget, aiptaisa is a local anemone, lol

ill try to get some photos of of other local possible species, but for the two mentioned i have had both, here are photos.

sun anemone eating coral banded! i was not happy that morning......

I'm going to have to move mine under a rock and see how they do. They seem to eat like crazy, and look awesome! I love them, so far I think they are my favorite thing I have, and not just because I collected it myself.

Mines purple, with an orange mouth. And then I have a solid white one. It looks like I may have one as a hitchiker on my LR too.

sorry guys ive been away for spring break, lost my glasses while snorkeling! eek anyways my home pc is down right now but when i get it up ill post the pics i have about 3 different types now some of them set up in my 5.5gl.
