Colorado is doing a hawaiian fish group buy

do you really want in on a sale that is so screwed up they dont know of a supplier has what they ordered? as it stands the group buy person wants to bail.... buying fish wholesale is risky at best, they usally try to ship like kind instead of what you ordered, do you want yellow tangs instead of yellow golbies? or charge you for an adult emperor angel when you expected a small flame? or what happens when the order comes in dead? I try to stick to inverts, they dont mess them up too bad, but fish....go to a store and ask them why did they order 400 sea apples and see what they say...

Hawaiian shippers are shady. And besides this time of year, fish boxes get bumped when luggage can go in its place.

I have spoken with the particular dealer that they are dealing with and he seems nice but "out there" on HIS demands. I dont understand why people do group buys in the first place. Seems like a total P.I.T.A. with all the hastle and going here and there to get the product when you can pay a little bit more for WAY less hastle by going to a LFS?!

How expensive are fish that you'd be willing to risk a sight unseen order? HUGE difference between fish and snails.

Personally I think you can get any one of those fish in the bayarea, if not instantly someone surely can order you one. Maybe out there in Colorado they don't have the supply we do, do buying a tank's worth of fish "online" is worth it. *shrug*

Here none of those fish cost that much more than the prices listed, perhaps there the prices are 5x those and it's worth it *shrug*

Connies In castro valley imports from a vendor in hawaii every saturday and from 10am-1pm they have a bag lot sale at 50 percent off. FYI

FWIW, you don't import from within the US borders :D Besides the fact that's really not a good thing that they sell right out of the bag ;) 50% off, now that helps the local scene. It's hard enough to run a LFS, then add on top a few vendors that are unsrcupeless (sp?) and sell at near cost.

I agree, HI shippers are a tought crowd, IMO your gonna get burned on this one. Yellow tangs the size of the Sears Tower, gill net marks, etc. Good luck, your gonna need it.

Yah, what lapsan said. That's the way to go. With the group buy, you get what you get... you have to deal with the whole group buy hassle.... you get to eat the xx% mortality of the fish that are getting shipped in. No thanks.

Have your LFS cherry pick what you want at the wholesaler.

I pretty much agree and think there are only a few group buys that are actually worth getting involved in, and I really like those to be coordinated through local stores if possible.
