Colorful Soft Corals?

Hi everybody. Soft Corals have the reputation of being all "brown." Of course this is false, but I know of very few colorful soft corals. The majority are brown, tan, mustard yellow, or cream. Even supposedly bright ones like Green Toadstool are mostly brown and don't impress me. What BRIGHT soft corals are there?

The only truly bright softies I know of are Nepthea/Sinularia and Cespitularia. Surely there are others. Please post links or better, pics to your own bright soft corals - thanks!

A nice yellow Sarcphyton elegans is really beautiful. There are also lots of brightly colored non-photosynthetic soft corals, such as dendronephthya and scleronephthas, but these difficult to maintain. I've kept a bright purple photosynthetic stereonephthya for a while. They aren't that common, but are a vivid purple.
Here's a shot of my old tank, when I used to live in New York.

Thanks for the reply, SKremk. Yeah, I meant photosynthetic (not dendros, chilis, etc.).

That purple photosynthetic stereonephthya is nice and that yellow fiji isn't too bad either! I wonder where I could find one of those...

Any others???

almost all of the beige/brown softies has a colored morph. we just need to always look at the LFS and websites.

i always regret when i see one in the lfs and pass, and dont see them again after i come back.

blue xenia

Yeah, I'm referring to soft corals in the sense of this forum - i.e. not corallimorphs or zoanthids, which have their respective forums - I am referring particularly to 'tree-like' and 'tableing' soft corals. I mentioned blue xenia (cespitularia) and green sinularia. I've got GSP.

I still haven't seen a toadstool or cabbage that I'd consider brightly colored - Prove me wrong! Anybody have pics of their bright soft corals? Post them!!! Anybody got a good pic of the incredible hulk toadstool? that looks like it might be nice.

I've been keeping an eye out at the LFS, but the only thing that really stood out was a pure white colt.

If it was a pure white colt, it was probably bleached. Colts unfortunately are dyed all sorts of colors. They loose the color after a while and generally don't do well.

Thanks for the response. I have pink xenia and blue cloves - neither are knockout colors though - more pastel. I'm interested in really vibrant, seen-from-across-the-room coloration.

Your post reminded me of clove polyps in general. There are some outstanding colorful ones, like the green highlighter cloves. Add them to the list!

Not vibrant enough?

macclellan, if you really want "seen-from-across-the-room coloration," maybe you should get a fishbowl with a betta and some pink gravel.

As I already said, this thread is about colorful leather-type corals. - I have mushrooms, zoas, GSP, out the wazoo and know they are very colorful. Nice rics though. :)

Your Sarcphyton is very nice, as is the Nepthea. No offense, but I'm not impressed by the gorgonians, algae-infested pipe organ, or red leather.

Well, that was rude, unnecessary, and unconstructive. I'm sorry that you feel threatened by someone looking for exceptionally vibrant corals. Nonetheless, thanks for posting the pics and to others for posting - I know know that I'll have to get a nice yellow Sarco!!!

Any others? Keep them coming!

I apologize -- I meant it as a joke! Next time I won't forget the smiley :)

For me, one of the most colorful toadstools is the Tyree. It has long polyps and the neon green is bright enough that it glows from across the room! Here is a pic of mine:

And here's a couple of pics of my blue cespitularia:

Nice pics! I saw some cespitularia this weekend but passed on it. He wanted $50 for it and it didn't look too good under the lights he had.

I'll have to see if I can find a Tyree toadstool. Those are pretty nice.

Anybody else?

I'm rather fond of the Yellow Fiji Leather, as well. Bright Coloration, and the one pictured is my favorite coral.

I got my eye on a large bright pink leather toadstool and I mean large 12in cap.....lots of color....any comments would be appreciated
