Columbus Zoo

My wife and I took my daughter to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium this this week and I just wanted to say that they had the mostt healthy fish I have seen at any zoo or aquarium so far. The coral tanks actually had GROWING corals in them and they were healthy and thriving, not just stuck in a tank for show then replaced w/ new ones when they die (leaving the old skeletons in the tank) *Newport Aquarium*, The fish only tank had some of the fattest tangs, angels..........I have ever seen. And the tank was spotless. Also the viewing window to the filter room had a cool frag tank that you could see. They had some nice acro's and the like. The rest of the zoo was great also with some new additions just opened, I was just kinda partial to the aquatics for some reason, My daughter fell in love w/ the manatees.....go figure! Besides the cost of gas, at $9 per person its a cheep trip and well worth it IMO.;)

But why can't we get one Daddy :fish2:
Sounds like you guys had fun.

Doug Warmoults (sp.?) used to be in charge of the Columbus Zoo's aquarium. He is now the curator of the zoo. Guess where a lot of the zoo's funding goes?
The Columbus Zoo has the absolute best aquatic displays FOR MARINE AQUARISTS I have ever seen. The Aquariums at Chattanooga, Newport, the Smokies, and others I've visited cannot come close to Columbus.
It's actually a little too good. It's tough coming home and having to make do with a tiny little aquarium after the huge displays there.

I'm sure we could. The wife and I got one at the Tennessee Aquarium a few weeks ago. I'd love to see what's going on behind the scenes in Columbus.

I might be able to get us a hook up at the PPG aquarium in Pittsburgh this weekend. Im going to be be in Pittsburgh all next week and im planning on going to the aquarium on monday.

The Col.Zoo has been a favorite of mine for years. I have not been there in a while so I'm glad to hear the reef is coming along. Last time I was there the aquarium was not in the best of shape-- a bit of a hair and slime algae problem-- but an excellent set up. Much nicer than the Slumcinnatti Zoo IMO. (Really I like Cincin but I have a friend from there and I like to pick on him! Hi Eric!:wildone: ) Seriously though, the ColZoo is flat, well laid out, clean etc. The CincinZoo gets all the press though... strange. Hats off to Jack Hanna for what he has done with that zoo over the years! Read his book "Monkeys on the Interstate". It goes into his tenure there quite a bit.

When he took over the place it was, as I understand it, a FREAKIN' DUMP. He is a genius fund raiser, he gets the community involved, does appearances on David Letterman etc. and to look at that zoo today and compare it to his description of what it was when he took charge-- complete 180. That zoo went from an outhouse to a first-class zoo on par with any other zoo in the world. I could go on for days but most people don't care about my ramblings so I'll just suggest you read that book. It's pretty good.
