comcast and port 25 no email alerts

curt.. no luck with comcast. they refuse to open port 25 for me and continue to say others are closing port 25 as this is what spammers use.

i checked and it looks like att is going to have same issue. threads on www seam to also comfirm this..

do you see a firm upgrade in the fututre to allow us to chose the outgoing port for email?

SMTP is TCP/25. You don't have a choice. Again, you're connecting OUTGOING via TCP/25 to the remote server, not NATing or changing an incoming service.

You should be able to just point to their SMTP server, unless they don't offer any email services.

It's like saying, "I want to access www.google.com on port 22523.

not sure what you are saying.. according to curt.. the ac3 uses port 25. comcast is my IP and has blocked port 25..

so in the email settings smtp.comcast.net.. will not get to email out.

Its called Port Mapping if you are using a Linksys router

on the internal ports you send it out on Port 25 but your router takes it and then pushes it up to send out the message. You won't be able to receive messages (ie setting up your own email server) but you will be able to send messages out.


AC3/Whatever (TCP Port 25 SMTP)
Router takes Port 25 Internal and then maps it to a different port on the external (DSL/Cable etc..) that isn't blocked and sends it out.

AC3 sends the following E-Mail message..

This is a test(TCP/25)

The router takes that message and changes the port from 25 to 10001 (or whatever port you find works for you)

This is a test(TCP/10001)

And it then forwards it to your ISP which isn't blocking port 10001 (for example) and it then sends it to whatever E-Mail address you want.

(Yes I know this isn't exactlly how its done but I'm trying to keep it simple since we don't want to go into the OSI model here)

Again, SMTP/25 IS what all email servers listen on and communicate globally. If you want to change the port on an outgoing mail, the mail server will never receive it. You're trying to change a variable that is out of your control.

curt and i did some testing on my pc.. trying to send some stuff out via the pc and not the aqua controller.. he confirmed that port 25 is blocked.

i can do email with my lap top and other pc's in the house since thunderbird and outlook express allow you to change the port for outgoing email.. the ac3 does not. is is set to send out email on port 25.

so there is not work around unless comcast unblocks port 25 or curt gets us some new firmware to allow us to change the email outgoing port correct?

I don't want to add fuel here, but I am an Network Administrator for a LOT of email servers.

SMTP port 25 is SERVER to SERVER, Server to Client is also 25, but since most email Server to Client is AUTHENTICATED, then now 587 is becoming the standard (again for CLIENT)

Providers that block 25 are attempting to block server to server un-authenticated email/spam, they have left 587 untouched since a spammer can't authenticate to a server.

Most ISP's that block 25, have you change your Outlook or email client to send to them on 587.

Neptune just needs to add a function to change the port #, just like they now do for http port number.

The next release of the AC3 & AC3Pro firmware have an option to configure which port to use for smtp. It will likely be released on our website next week. Currently, I'm only aware of one customer in which his isp blocks port 25, and that was done because a trojan had hijacked his PC, and was sending spam.

Actually the blocking of port is getting quite common. The logic is that a commercial spammer using a home account or dsl account just couldn't setup a Email Server and then blast it out on the normal port 25 server to server connection. As a byproduct it has forced business that are using a home connection to pay for business connections with Static IP and no posrts blocked.

You might find you will also have to add authentication to your email client in firmware (Passing of an account and password)

Authentication is already is place, and from what I have seen that is what most ISP require to combat spam.

Then you should be ISP proof. The customer should use his OWN email address as the from address(since authentication matches email, login and password). Then all they have to do is confirm with their provider the port (Commonly referred to as MSA port)

curt the update will be great please let us know when it is out. believe me when i say. they will not unblock port 25. i spent hours on the phone with them. i filled out forms ect. months ago you could try and plead your case by filing out these forms. of course one floor at comcast does not know what the other floor is doing.

i finally got a level three tech, he says we have NOT unblocked port 25 in a long time. it will not happen. told me i could chose another ISP. checked with att. guess what they are also blocking port 25.
