Come with me on my Custom 77 Gallon setup

Any good suggestions on how to get rid of unwanted Zoas?

I have some on some rock that if I don't take of soon they wil take over the joint. LOL.

Thanks
Keith

Well I finally did some tank maintainence.

I pulled out a few pieces of LR and scraped off some of the zoas. And all the Xenia!! It was pretty and all, but it just grows too fast.

I also tried to get out some of the "weeds" that I have growing. They look like very short Xenia but dark brown. I got most of it off the sand but it was hard to get it off the rocks.

Also changed 15 gallons of water while I was a it.

I took a few pictures the other day, I am still sizing the pitures, I post them tmorrow.

Well here are some pictures.

Near the front of the tank, some Zoas, the Birdsnest, and my Clam

My little itty bitty Blastos

My Sailfin

And a pretty terrible Full Tank Shot, I have yet to learn how to take good photos.

I am thinking about the design of the fishroom and possibly some modifications to the tank that I will start discussing soon, so I'll be looking for some inout from you more experienced reefers.

thanks
Keith

Keith, your pictures look very nice to me. I like the first one especially.

Regarding the full tank shot (FTS), it appears the glass is smudged on one or the other side. Also, remove the feeding clip. That would make the picture look better.

Thanks Melev,

The first pic is my favorite of the bunch too.

I really need to take more time before taking FTSs. LOL

Today I got a new heater from my LFS. Yet another heater bite the dust on me!!! That makes three if anyone is counting. :mad2:

This time it was a Finnex working on its own controller. I truly do not understand what is happening with heaters.

Anyway, I also emptied my RowaPhos Reactor, it didn't seem to do much for the bubble algae. I cleaned it out with some vinegar and started it back up with Carbon.

We'll see how that goes. Other than that Tank is doing pretty well, slow growth, but oh well.

Keith

The heater I got from the LFS kind of bites, so I ordered two of these from Marine Depot, Heater , hopefully they will do better than the others I have had.

I am amazed at how fast the Carbon in the Phos Reactor has helped the clairity of the water. Dramatic difference. I'll try and take some pictures tonight or tomorrow night.

How often do you guys who run carbon change it out?

Thanks
Keith

I run it all the time and change it about every 2-4 weeks depending on when I think about it.

It is crazy how much trouble you have had with heaters.

Thanks for the reply, I have heard 1 week, which seemed a bit much.

True enough on the heaters, but (knock on wood) better heaters than lights or skimmers. At least they are cheaper to replace.

Thanks for the article Marc.

Looks like once a week change is the way to go.

Looks like the SeaChem is probably the best for the money as well.

Thanks again,

It turns out that I need to be a bit more careful when changing the carbon weekly.

I changed the carbon on Saturday. Disconnected the vinyl tubing from the reactor, after turning off the pump. Cleaned it out and put in more carbon.

Well, when I hooked back out the input and output tubing I didn't notice that the output going back to the sump was pouring over the side.

I left the room for just a minute, and when I came back I saw a puddle coming from the tank.

Luckily I installed a pond liner under the sump which holds about 3 gallons, so only about a quart was on the floor. Ran got the wet/dry vac and sucked up the rest.

Not a major disaster but as close to a flood as I have had. I guess I need to strap the return tube to the side of the sump to prevent this from happening again.

Great pictures!

I change my carbon monthly. Salifert makes an activaded carbon test kit to measure its remaining holding capacity. I bought one but haven't used it yet.

I'm glad you avoided a big flood.

Now to plan the fish room!

Mike,
Let us know what the test results are after a month of use. It would save some money if the carbon will last that long.

So I turned off my CL pump to fight the heat during the summer months. Well the temp has dropped and the last month we didn't run the AC very much.

The electric bill has run in the $150-$170 range without AC and in the $300-$320 with AC, ever since I set up the tank..
The bill came this month and was $58 !!!!!!!!! Could the Pan World 100Xpx be using that much!!!

I need a Kill-O-Watt meter.

Keith

No way that pump is drawing that much. I'd still get a Kill a watt, though be prepared to cringe at what some of your normal household equipment runs at:(
Your AC probably draws 5kw or so when running, depending on the size of your house. They really suck up the juice. Also, do you have an electric clothes dryer? I made up a nice discreet clothesline on the side of the house and it knocked off a good $80 a month during the warm months.
More than once, PG&E (are you on SoCalEd?) has simply screwed up the billing so check your meter against what they say it is.
Good luck:)
Chris

Part me me suspected a miss read as well. Yup, Southern Cal Edison down here. And a gas dryer :) Wouldn't go electric if I could help it.
I ordered a Kill a Watt yesterday, so we'll see what things are running at.

Keith

I was pretty surprised at what the TV, computer, etc draws just sitting there.
Then add the wife and 3 daughters with hair dryers, curling irons, stereos, computers... You get the idea. I hit the 3rd tier at $0.34/kWh every month
It makes the ROI on solar panels a bit quicker. Have been contemplating that one a lot lately.

Actually our solar panels are being installed starting the end of October:thumbsup: We have been talking about it for years, and now turned out to be the time.

Net metering here we come!!!

Now I just need a Vortech with battery back up!!
