Come with me on my Custom 77 Gallon setup

Put it in a small bowl with crushed coral, and hope the flow doesn't blow it out. Leave it be, and hope for it to increase in mass.

A couple of things going on lately.

The baby hammer is in a small Tupperware at the bottom of the tank and looks like it is increasing in size slowly. :D

I have been battling low Alkalinity for months (in the 6-7 dKh range). Well, I finally used up the last of my purchased two part and made some of Randy's Three Part (RTP).

I have dosed twice with RTP and my Alkalinity last night was at 10.055 dKh

Other test results.
pH 8.34 (Man do I love having a RK2 with a probe)
Calcium 340.56 ppm (would like to see this a bit higher)
Mag 1320
Nitrate 0 ppm
PO4 0 ppm (but I still have bubble algae so there is some that is tied up in there)

Salinity 1.025

On the bad news front. The Bi-colored Angel I got (while doing well and the Maroon is chasing him less) is nipping at my SPS

So most of my SPS have little PE. Not sure what I'm going to do about that. Maybe if I feed him tons he'll quit? Is that just wishful thinking?

Ideas?

Keith

If you have an angel nipping at corals, their PE will be less. (PE stands for polyp extention, silent readers ;) )

I have been adding RTP. I have been trying to be more methodical about measuring the amounts and such.

Tests this morning.

So far I am adding about 20 ml morning and night. I'm doing it twice a day to ease the pH swing.

Mag 1170
Alk 9.83 dKh
Cal 376.68 ppm

I would like to see the calcium a little higher but pretty good.

I am going to try a catch the Bi-colored Angel. He is a pretty fish but not worth the lack of SPS.

Maybe the clown was trying to protect the corals? I didn't see a anenome in the pics, if the angel was trying to eat the coral he hosted, could be why the clown became aggressive towards it. Great tank btw, I'm setting up a 75 and although plan to keep it simple, yours is great motovation to get my butt in gear and finish setting it up already!

Hey Keith, what does RTP stand for?

Randy's Twp Part, I believe.

Wow, major boost in Alk. Going to use RTP to help boost Calcium as well?

Thanks very much for the compliment, good to hear some feedback.

I never thought that Clown could be protecting the corals. And you're right no anemone, so that sounds possible.

Dan,

Actually it's Randy's Three Part. I use the Magnesium part as well. Enough people are using it that it should have it's own acronym:lol:

Bklynmet,
I am using all three parts Alk, Calc, Mag. I am definately thinking about getting a dosing pump like rdmpe.

Here is a link to his thread.

On the good news front, the baby hammer is looking to be about twice the size it was when I found him. His base is looking healthy, I'll get a picture later today.

Hey Keith, dosing pump is still going strong. I recently put it on a timer so now it doses from 11pm to 11am, helps to smooth out the photosynthesis based PH swing...

Last night I went to refill my two-part jugs. I didn't have the jugs and stuff very well marked and accidentally poured the part one into the part two jug which still had about an inch of part two in it. Didn't realize it at first, so ended up wasting at least a half gallon of it :rolleye1:

So anyway I'm making up new batches this morning. I have found that the easiest way for me is to make it in a 4 gallon batch using 5 gallon buckets. This leaves plenty of room for stirring while still a good size batch so I don't have to do it very often. It's easy to put gallon marks on the white home depot buckets with a sharpie, and the lids are pretty much water tight too.

Randy,

Good to hear about the pump. I've been following your thread. Man, you must be going through the test kits. :eek2:

Bummer aboutthe mistake, I hate when I make mistakes like that.

Keith,

I have this as a dosing pump / ATO. I chose it for cost reasons since other 'dial-in' dosers are pricier.

Niveaumat SP3000

It's connected to my AC Jr where I have it supply power to the doser for 1 minute every 12 minutes (works out to be close to the evap rate for my tank.) Plus the float valve would cut the power if the water is higher than you want it.

I have had it for 3 months now, supplying fresh water from a reservoir without any issues. Thought I'd share.

There was a thread: http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=911869
Acroholic's post about midway down the page show's him using the Niveaumats to dose stiff from the jars on the shelf which I thought was a cool idea.

Nice pump, but I think the one Randy is using is a little cheaper.

I'll have to check. Nice thread of equipment. I am really going to have to plan out the new fish one, when that time comes.

Keith

I ordered some Seachem PhosGuard this morning to help battle the phosphate problem I have. Although every test I do reads 0 ppm , but I still have tons of bubble algae. We will see how the PhosGuard works.

I am going to try a catch the Bi-Colored today. I will let everyone know how that goes. For right now I am going to put him in the fuge. I will trade him to a local reefer. FOWLR prefered.

I am reprogramming the firmware on my RK2 today as well. Man I love days off.

Here is the dosing pump that I want. The same one Randy is using. link

Even with a coral nipping fish and a phosphate problem I still love just looing at the tank. :D

That's funny

The link you just gave, look at the High Bidder name.

Stile2222, Stile2 ring a bell. Yes that would be Me!!

Can you believe that Stile2 was taken on ebay:eek2: ?

The Emerald Crab (I just got one) is starting to eat the bubble algae. I am taking out the big ones and hopefully he (yes to the two big claws) will keep the new ones from forming.

On other nate, I got the Bi-Color Angel out of the Display. As a result I now have new Aquascaping!! I am sure that none of you have ever been through something like that.

When the dust settles and I reglue several corals I will post some pictures. I think that I will actually like it better.

LOL I didn't even look at the bidder or I would have known...

Just some advice about how I usually go for an item like this on ebay... I figure out what the max is that I'd want to pay, in this case say $120 but I don't place a bid early in the auction. When the auction is almost over, I click the place bid button and enter the bid amount and get to where the "confirm" button is (I think there is another click to get to the confirmation screen). Then in another window I have the auction open when there are only a couple of minutes left and I refresh it as the clock winds down. When it hits about 10 seconds I place my bid. That way nobody has time to outbid me...

The risk is that if you mess something up or there is some wierd glitch in the matrix, your bid might not get placed and you don't get the item... Also, if someone else has a higher max bid, you don't have time to change yours upwards. You have to be sure you are at your max price and willing to let it go if someone elses bid is higher. So you decide how you want to do it, I just figured I'd tell you so you realize that there may be some butt heads like me waiting to out bid you at the last second :D

I'm kinda guilty of the same thing too on Ebay.. I learned something from one of my economics classes almost ten years ago that the winner of an auction is acutally a loser becuase there is noone else willing to pay that price on the item.

I reason that if you can save a few buck$ than from buying directly frmo a retalier, then you're not a loser.

Good luck with the auction Kieth - know that there are NOW other reefers looking at the same thing:lol:
