Common SW Misconceptions

I don't intend to start any scuffles here on RC, but it seems like there are a lot of misconceptions and mispronunciations when it comes to our hobby. So, as a perfectionist, I thought I'd start a thread to help clear up some of these incorrect terms. Please, do not be offended by any of these corrections, and constructive critisicm is always a plus. I'm sure we have all made these mistakes, including me. The first 3 I have for the list are:

1) Chaetomorpha: pronounced "kay-toe", not "cheeto"

2) Coralline: pronounced "kora-lynn", not "coral-line"

3) When listing a specific organism, the Genus is capitalized and the species is not capitalized. Scientifically these are italicized, but we won't get into that. ex. Yellow Tang: Zebrasoma flavescens

and french, feel free to list the one you just caught me on

I say "Key-toe". Tomato tomato... potato potato. :D

Zooxanthellae was(is) a real doosie for me.

Do you know the proper pronunciations for all the different coral? When I first started reading about all of them I felt like I was taking a haphazard crash course in Latin. It wasn't until I started hanging out with other reefers that I began to get the slightest inclination of coral pronunciation.

i know i mispronounce i alot of words but my wife usually corrects me, it gets real bad once i start drinkin also.

Zoa or Zoos for Zoanthid... you gotta any Zoooos man? "I outta slap you silly" just say Zoa-n-thids or the pretty button polyps.

I gotta say, you picked one of my favorites in that first post. Every time I hear someone say CHEE-TO I can't help think how crappy that tank must look with cheese dust floating around in it. :lmao: :hammer:

French I was referring to the amphipods from another post. Not really a mispronunciation but probably a common mistake. Latin pronunciation is ridiculous, but I think I'm getting the hang of it due to all the ones I've had to know for class. Atleast we're all on the same system globally, though. Unlike units of length and weight. And yes, zooxanthellae is a good one, so here's:

4) Zooxanthellae: pronounced "zo-uh-zan-thell-lay"

I think we have our own reef ebonics.

And french, I started dosing kalk so I rigged up my 6 gallon top-off to slow drip. As of right now, I'm in good shape. I'll still get you some shrooms though.

Wow, I know there are some pronunciations that I get wrong but I didn't think coralline was one of them. Good to know how it should be said.

Remind me if ever around Byh20 to not try and pronounce
anything reef related.

Better idea, lets have reefin school at Byh20's house some day. Then he can teach us all the correct way to say things.

Until then, its still going to be cheeto, even if that does make you think of Cester the big orange cheese cat, or whatever he is :)
