computer automation?

Does anyone have any experience with using a computer to automate functions on their tank? Instead of buying an expensive dedicated controller, I was hoping to set up a bare bones computer to control functions such as lights on my main tank, frag tank, and refugium, control a couple of koralia powerheads as well as control auto top off and automatic water changes. I would like to know what I would need to purchase to have this ability, maybe a pci card attached to relays or something?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

For a budget minded solution, you can look at an X10 solution. Google X10, there are lot's of products out there.

If you're looking for a more powerful (flexible) option, you can use a PLC, such as an Allen-Bradley Micrologix 1100 or 1500. There are lot's of PLC manufacturers; PLC Direct is probably the cheapest.

If you're not familiar with PLC programming, the X10 option may be best.

Even with PLC's you can get into the range of todays controllers after purchasing relays, temp probes, etc... There are basic controllers out there starting at $150 that will work fine and are upgradable if you chose to add more to your system.

I started to do it with the building controllers I use at work, but had to laugh after the first $5000 in controls and still couldn't do everything I wanted to. Good thing I have stuff laying around to try :)
