Concrete Sand Bed

The only time MY sand bed had clumped up and had a hard surface is when my ionic balance got out of whack and I had calcium precipitation. Is it possible that this is happening to you?

Once your sand bed has clumped up in the tank and the surface is hard, is there a way to "soften" things up?

I would say its time to change it out

Necessarius snails and bristle worms keep it from clumping in the beginning but they can't unclump it;)

Things can go wrong with a sand bed, but they don't have a "shelf life" per say. They do have a "half life" however and turn to lead by atomic decay. :D
