I am faced with a problem that i know will be a problem when i get this set up...... i know my paretns will not want to go back and forth to the LFS to get more and more RO water to fill up my tank, is conditioned tap water really that bad for a tank? i used RO water only in my nano, and still got the diatoms and algae......what do you guys think?

I wouldn't do it personally, but if ro di water is really not an option for you I would make sure to find someone that can test your tap water for TDS, and make sure you use only the best water conditioner. People have successfully used tap water in reef systems, they are just few and far between. Personally, if it meant several weeks of trips back and forth (once a week or whatever so the parents wouldn't get mad), I would do that instead of using tap water. When you think of all the money you will be putting into that tank in fish, corals, etc, skipping out on this inconvenience/cost can really end up getting you in the end.

Plus, you think the algae in your nano was bad, imagine using water with more "algae causing" agents, and you are also talking of using better lights. Chances are, unless you have miracle tap water (which I don't think exists anywhere near orlando), you will be fighting algae for the life of the tank if you decide to go with tap water...

I think I would be afraid of is it called hard water? where minerals and stuff (i know conditioner can help) could still get into your tank and harm things like corals.

An alternative might be to try some purified water jugs at the grocery store but check them witha TDS meter first - who knows how often they changeout their filters right?

Don't do it if you can help it. I have a whole house water conditioning and filtration system and use a 5 stage RO/DI unit behind that for my tank.

I would LOVE IT if I could just use the house water, but with all the money in that tank im not about to take that chance.

Buy a simple TDS meter and you will know why.

Maybe you got some bad water for your Nano I have seen high TDS in water being sold as R/O always a good idea to check out the source, although salt residual in the container will also give you a high TDS reading. Tap water is trouble.

seth remember when you had to BOIL your live rock for like a day to kill the fields of hair algae in your 29. lol sigh its not that hard to get r/o water please dont do it to your 75. just call mac and hell give you som,e

RODI filters are a reefcaretakers best friend. a one time investment will last you for 2 years before you have to put more money into it, easily.

I'm in Kissimme and can prolly help you out. I probably have 40-50gals worth the containers, and a ro/di unit. Let me know and we'll work someting out.

I LIVE RIGHT OFF OF MILL RUN!!!!! Wow your close, it takes me 5 minutes to ride my bike to aqua-holics.....so, you live near the hospital?

D-D Giesemann Blue Actinic Plus or Blue: $6.00 per lamp
D-D Giesemann Midday: $6.00 per lamp
D-D Giesemann Aquablue: $8.00 per lamp
D-D Giesemann Pure Actinic Plus or True Actinic $10.00 per lamp

What combination of four lamps should i get?

i know everyone is going to hate me for saying it - but my water in deltona is 230 ppm and i used it in my reef for 8 months before i finally got a ro/di unit - gotta do what you gotta do - but it seems you might have a new local friend that might be able to help you out- i used it and it was fine - no real problems to list in all that time

Why not just ride your bike with a wagon attached to get water from there?? would only take a couple trips and it'd make for a good workout at the same time.
