This is my most resent story. It is for those of you who do not know better and for those of you who do but refuse to learn from your own or others mistakes. Please learn from it.
When I bought the contents of the fellow's tank last year, I got several corals and several fish. One of the fish was a purple tang. It is a good size tang. I would say it is 4+ inches. I got several others "“ a blue damsel (it went to the LFS), a B. cardinal, and a royal basslet. I was told the tang ruled the roost. Kathy and I, mostly Kathy, found a Hippo tang at the CR. She decided I needed it in my tank. It was plenty big enough "“ actually a little bigger than the purple. I got a --- Oh, I can't remember what it is called. Dana told me to get it for hair algae. It is brown/black and orange. I also have some blue/green chromis "“ not as many as I have bought, but four remain.
One of the first fish I had when I had saltwater fish "“ 30 years ago "“ was a naso tang. I think they are great. I wanted one. I ordered one. It was smaller than I wanted but I put it in the tank anyway. It did not last a week. It would eat some but the purple and hippo bullied it to death, I think.
Last month I order a naso and desjardini tang. They were, I thought, supposed to be about 4+ inches. They were too small, too. I should have left them at the LFS, but I wanted them in my tank. The desjardini is really neat too. I would trade the purple and the hippo for either a naso or a desjardini at this point. I could not catch either, but I would trade. Ha! HA!!
You have guessed what happened. The desjardini did not make it very long. I never saw the purple or the hippo bully the desjardini, but he never really ate very well. The naso is also gone now. He ate the seaweed ok, but not much more. It was as though the frenzy at feeding time was too much for the desjardini and, except for the seaweed, the same for the naso.
For those of you who are saying "œYep, Yep, Yep, is he not old enough to know better", I will say "œYep, I sure am." It makes be especially mad at myself when I look back, just a few months, and remember the first naso dying.
SO, if anybody ever hears me talking about getting another fish, especially a naso or desjardini, and I have not set up the 300g, do something to wake me up, jog me out of my stupor, pull my head out of the sand, or some such condition.
If you work for a LSF, do not let me buy another fish if it is not bigger than that stupid (it is better to call the fish stupid, right?) purple tang.
It is very embarrassing to tell this story. I tell it so others may not make the same or a similar mistake.
I have made lots of other mistakes. I have lost several corals in my short adventure with saltwater (this decade). Thirty years ago all that was available to me except for fish would have been an anemone. I killed one of those years ago, too.
BUT, that is the current, most recent, blunder of mine. Get to know me. I can teach you lots of things not to do.
