I've certainly had folks struggle to understand why total system evaporation is reflected in the lowest, return section; but not that evaporation doesn't occur from all exposed water surfaces. Size of the return section is about personal preference. A small return chamber needs a really reliable/redundant ATO as the pump will run dry quickly, but it means rock solid salinity.
