Confused at Clownfish Behavior

I have been seeing some things with my Occy clownfish and was hoping someone could help me out! I have had my larger clownfish for about 3 years now. I got her when she was very little and has grown to about 2.5-3 inches (not sure never measured her). For about as long as I've had her she has been hosted by my duncan coral and spends about 70 percent of the day in it.

About 6 months ago I added a very small Occy in hopes they would pair and live in the duncan together. After a little aggression, the larger clown accepted him and since then they usually spend most of the day together. They had been living together in a 20 gallon long for a while but the new clown never went into the duncan other than brushing up against it once in a while.

I recently upgraded to a 50 gallon breeder and I have noticed that my smaller clown now sleeps in the duncan with the larger clown but still doesn't enter it during the day. I thought maybe the larger clown was bullying him but I have now seen the larger clown "shaking" at the smaller one which I understand to be submission? The smaller clown usually just looks at the larger one in a confused way when she does this.

Does this mean that the "female" is actually not a female yet even though "she" is larger and far more feisty than the smaller clown? Any insight would be helpful. :fish1:

I just learned something. I've had different clowns over the years, but never a pair at the same time. I would have pegged the smaller one as the shaker.
