I wonder if corals ever feel the same way with the UV beating down on them ?
If they physically generate heat from giving off the unused radiation ?

I doubt they feel the same way since the nervous system is quite different. If I understand it correctly, UV rays don't carry a lot of heat energy like the red light does. The UVA and UV B do more to damage the DNA strands which cause skin cells to die. Your immune system reacts to this by making the blood vessels expand to supply more blood to repair those cells which in turn activates pain receptors to let you know there was damage done. UVA penetrates more deeply into the skin and can do the most damage but UVB is mostly responsible for causing sunburns. In response to this, the body produces a pigment that darkens the skin (tan) which in turn absorbs more of the bad UV rays. Fair skinned people typically don't tan and are more at risk from UV rays.
Corals don't have blood like mammals do but they do have symbiotic algae. The UV rays tend to pass through the outer layers of the coral’s skin and directly affect the Zooxanthellae algae inside the corals. The response is usually that the coral will eject the algae which causes bleaching so I can’t see how there would be a correlation between the pain we feel and the damage done by bleaching. A lot of corals will spawn at night because their offspring are very susceptible to these UV rays and will have a much better chance to survive if they are not burned up when ejected.
