so I have been looking at the nano tanks. The all in one kinds and was thinking of getting a mantis.
Would a 12 gallon one be too small for a smaller mantis ? Also where would I find one.. I live in canada.
They have one at www.oceanaquatics.com but he is a bigger variety.

thanks alot for any advice

When it comes to living in Canada, there's a bit of a predicament finding the right species of mantis. I ended up finding my G. smithii at hidden reef (labelled as a peacock) in abbotsford and recently picked up a real peacock mantis at J&L aquatics in Burnaby. You're from calgary right? talk to Gold's... i believe they get mantids in once in a while.

I do not know of any regular mantis shippers from canada, so i think your best bet is to talk to all the lfs around. study roys list and know what to avoid. a peacock would get too big, G. chiragra is just a mantis i would avoid, no spearers except for P. ciliata.

the photo of "mantis shrimp" in the oceanaquatics site is not a peacock. G. viridis maybe? im not sure though. plus they never change the photo whether or not they actually have a mantis in... lots of places do this.

edit: peacocks count as the bigger variety... you'll need a bigger tank for that guy, but imo, the peacock is definitely worth it.

I've had a mantis in a 12 gallon JBJ nano, and she did great. I would stick with a small mantis though, my chiragra out grew the 12 pretty quickly.
