Container holding top off water, I think

I think the Rubbermaid trash can, 20 gallons, is leaching something. I pump out my RODI and TDS reads 1-2. Then I have noticed over the past month I have started to see a little algae bloom on the sandbed. I directed flow to it thinking something is building up. Not much better. Then I did a water change this past weekend(friday night) and it hasn't really helped it. Additionally, I changed my phosphate reactor media for removing phosphate, after it had been in there for 2 months. It is Eco Marine Phos remover or something like that.

So I went to measure my top off water in the container it is in and I saw that there was a TDS reading of 26. This could be slightly possible because the can I mix saltwater in I also pour RODI top off water into and use that as a staging area before I take the water out of there and bring it inside and dump it into the top off water container. Both containers are Rubbermaid Trash cans, one is 20 gallons and the other is 32.

Another bit of info I think someone will ask is I changed my rodi filters probably 5-6 months ago.

So what should I do?

Thanks,

Chris

RO/DI water is a magnet for air born contaminants. the rise in TDS you are seeing is most likely just CO2 and dust particles.

So should I aerate the tub?

if the TDS you are seeing is CO2 it wont hurt anything. just aerate the water after you add salt, before you add it to the tank

Is a Rubbermaid trash can food safe? It is dyed tank.

if your using the gray "brute" cans, yes they are

i was doing this for 24 hours or so before I added it. I used a modded maxi jet 1200

CO2 isn't of any concern. it will show on a TDS meter but it wont harm anything. just keep a lid on the can to keep dust out, CO2 is going to get in the water anyway but its nothing to worry about

I was thinking the same thing, not being any bio-activity in the RO water, CO2 levels should not rise above atmospheric concentration, so aeration would not remove any of it, if anything it would add CO2 if the level in the water is below atmospheric...
