Controlling Pumps, Lights, Etc.

I am planning controls for my 110 semi-reef (primarily FOWLR and active inverts, with maybe a couple of soft corals), I clearly need a temperature control and the ability to switch one powerhead off and on periodically to create some turbulence in the water. It seem like the temperature is best maintained with a dedicated commercial controller like the Ranco, and the powerhead can be handled with a separate controller (I will go with Tunze or Ecotech MP10).

Beyond these two, I need to:

1. Turn lights on and off, with separate controls for the blues and daylight.

2. Turn off the main pump.

3. Turn off the skimmer.

4. Salinity and ph monitoring would be nice to have but they are not necessary.

Assuming you believe the Ranco is the best way to handle temperature control, it seems that the rest can be handled with a couple of switchable powerstrips and a timer instead of going the dedicated controller route.

Is a controller necessary here?

Thanks.

There is a new controller coming out last this month or next month it is a Neptune Apex Jr. 150 dollars and comes with a 4 way plug it is expandable.

Reef Keeper will work great for you. Expandable, PH ORP anything you wish. Also they have a Tunze controller module.

+1

Wish I had bought my apex first and not wasted money on a ranco and assorted mechanical timers.

Go with the apex jr. Best deal on the market from the best controller company.
